Women’s Swimming & Diving Improves to 2-0 with Victory over VMI

Emmitsburg, Md. (October 7, 2017) – The Mount St. Mary's University women's swimming & diving team earned a 124-76 victory over VMI on Saturday for its second straight win to begin the season. The Mountaineers won eight events on the afternoon.


The Mount opened the meet strong as the relay squad consisting of Valeria Villagran, Lauren Gullickson, Juliette Lacoste and Colette Robinson took first place in the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:10.93.

Mount St. Mary's dominated the individual events on the afternoon, and had the top-three finishers in a pair of events. In the 200 IM, Maggie deTar earned a first-place finish (2:36.78), while Juliet Whitman (2:38.55) and Lacoste (2:39.07) finished second and third, respectively. The Mount also took the top-three spots in the 400 free, with deTar placing first (4:46.56) and Whitman (5:12.51) and Victoria Aung (5:27.57) finishing 2-3.

Mary Lombardi and Bridget Vaughan earned the top-two times in the 100 free as Lombardi registered a first-place finish in 1:02.89 and Vaughan clocked in at 1:04.40. Lombardi also took first place in the 1500 free with a time of 18:32.12, and Vaughan won the 200 free in 2:17.72.

In the 100 fly, the freshmen duo of Villagran and Erin Vopalensky finished 1-2 with Villagran clocking in at 1:09.05, and Vopalensky touching the wall in 1:09.21. Fellow freshman Gabrielle Benedictis earned her first collegiate victory with a first-place showing in the 100 back in 1:14.35.

Juniors Alyssa Felos (1:18.03) and Lauren Gullickson (1:18.93) registered the top pair of times in the 100 breast.

In the team's first diving event of the season, Laci Vickery notched the Mount's top score at 146.35, while Peyton Fuller earned a mark of 140.18 and Laura Kingham posted a score of 129.54.

To close out the meet, the Mount's freshman relay squad of Benedictis, Villagran, Vopalensky and Lizanne Passaro posted the top time in the 200 free relay, clocking in at 1:59.51.

Mount St. Mary's is back in action on October 13 for its first road meet of the season against Monmouth at 2 p.m.
