Washington, D.C. (August 23, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's opened the 2019 season with a 1-0 overtime loss at Howard on Friday night. The Bison scored 4:07 into the overtime period to earn the victory.
The Bison (1-0) earned the win when Arianna Morgan scored off a deflection by Mount keeper Charlotte Elrod in the 95th minute. That was the only shot by either team in the overtime period.
The Mountaineers were outshot, 14-to-9, in the game while the Bison had a 10-to-1 edge in corner kicks. Howard, the defending SWAC champions, were led by goalkeeper Alayah Hightower's four saves. Elrod made five saves for the Mountaineers in the game.
Hightower made a save on Mount freshman Hannah Cooksey with 41 seconds remaining in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
Maggie Wishart and Cooksey led the Mount with a pair of shots in the game. Morgan led Howard with five shots.
The Mountaineers are back in action for the home opener on Sunday, August 25, with a 1:00 p.m. matchup with defending Big South champion Radford.
Notes: The Mount is 9-5-3 all-time against Howard…The Mount is now 5-23-0 all-time in season openers, including a 4-5-0 mark over the past nine seasons.
