October 19, 2018--Mount St. Mary's lost to Northeast Conference leading Central Connecticut, 4-0, on Friday night at the CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, Conn. The Blue Devils scored three goals in a span of six minutes early in the second half to break open a one-goal game en route to the win.
Central Connecticut (13-1-2, 7-0-0 NEC), which clinched the NEC regular season title with the win, scored 7:45 into the game to take the early lead. Shauny Alterisio scored on a free kick from 40 yards out to put the Blue Devils on top. The Mount responded, but shots by Sarah Harmon and Jenna West were turned away by CCSU goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh. CCSU was able to maintain the one-goal advantage at the break.
The Blue Devils struck for three goals in a six minute span to break the game open in the second half. Danielle Pearse started the scoring when she curled a shot from the top of the box five minutes into the second stanza. Two minutes later, Roma McLaughlin drove home a shot to make it 3-0, and just four minutes later, McLaughlin struck again to give CCSU the four-goal advantage. The Mount (3-8-3, 2-2-2 NEC) was not able to generate much on the offensive end in the second half, registering one shot in the final 45 minutes.
Maggie Barron made three saves while allowing four goals in 56:34 of action while Charlotte Elrod came on in relief, making one save while not allowing a goal in the final 33:26 of the game. Cavanaugh made three saves in the win.
With the loss, the Mount falls to fifth place in the NEC standings with two games left on the schedule. The top four teams in the standings advance to the NEC Tournament. Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Sunday, October 21, with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Wagner.
