#MountTop20 : Alicia Mirando Scores Twice to Beat FDU, Continues Mount’s Strong Season for No. 20 Moment

Emmitsburg, Md. (June 24, 2013) -- As the Mount St. Mary's athletic department counts down the 2012-13 Top 20 Moments, No. 20 brings us to Waldron Family Stadium where women's soccer's leading scorer Alicia Mirando provided all the offense needed in the Mount's 2-1 home win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 28, 2012.

Carrying a 5-4 record and playing six of their previous seven games on the road, the Mountaineers returned to Emmitsburg for the Northeast Conference home opener in front of the home crowd. In the same week that the Mount honored the 20th Anniversary women's soccer team, Mirando shined with two first-half goals to take down FDU to improve to 6-4 and 1-1 in the NEC.

In the sixth minute, Jackie Corley lofted a corner kick to the middle of the six yard box that skimmed off a defender's head and fell to Andrea Bujacich at the back post. Bujacich crossed the ball back in front of the goal to a wide open Mirando who one-timed it into the back of the net.

Later in the half with 26:23 gone, Keriann McGettigan received the ball at half field and found Mirando one-on-one with her defender right outside the 18-yard box. The sophomore forward fired a left-footed shot on the ground to the far post on the right side for her second goal of the afternoon.

The Mount's 2-0 first half cushion was enough to withstand a goal by FDU in the second half in a 2-1 victory. The Mount has now won two in a row and three out of four against the Knights.

The 6-4 record was the first in program history through 10 games, making the 2012 squad the fastest to reach six victories.

Throughout the early part of the season, Mirando had her hand in goals at crucial moments. Two games after the win over FDU, the sophomore forward tallied the Mount's third goal to put the contest out of reach in a 3-0 victory against Robert Morris to move to 7-5 for the first time in school history. Earlier in the season on Sept. 9, it was Mirando who netted goals in both halves to give the Mount a 2-1 win at Howard to open the season with a 3-2 record for the first time since 1994.

The two-goal performance against FDU was the third career multi-goal game for Mirando, who finished the season with a team-best seven goals in 2012. With 10 goals in two seasons, the Mechanicsburg, Pa. native currently sits tied for 11th on the Mount's all-time scoring list. Two more goals will put her in a tie for 10th, and 14 more would help her pull even with Christy Wicks' school record 24 goals.

The seven goals for Mirando was the first seven-goal season for a Mount player since Karyn Farrar netted seven in 2005. The total is also tied for the fourth-most in single-season history.

Mirando and the Mountaineers will kick off the 2013 campaign on Aug. 23, at UMBC.
