Washington, D.C. (September 9, 2012)--Sophomore Alicia Mirando scored both goals to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 2-1 victory at Howard on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers improve to 3-2 on the season, the team's best five-game start to a season since 1994.
Mirando opened the scoring in the 40th minute when she receving a long pass from freshman Brinley Watts and buried the shot to the right-hand part of the goal.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Mirando beat her defender and pushed a shot past the Howard goalkeeper for her second goal of the game. Her team-leading fourth goal of the year gave the Mount a 2-0 lead.
Howard's Retha Koeford cut the Mount advantage to 2-1 with just under 12 minutes left, but Mount St. Mary's was able to hold on for the victory.
Mount St. Mary's outshot Howard (0-7-2), 17-11, in the game . Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Bourne made three saves while holding the Bison off the scoreboard in the first half while Vicky Cocozza made four saves in the second half, allowing one goal.
The Mount is back in action on Tuesday, September 11, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Bucknell.
Game Notes: The last time the Mount had a winning record after five games was when the team opened the 1994 season with a 3-2 mark...Last year, the Mount lost to Howard, 1-0, at home...Mount St. Mary's holds a 6-3-2 lead in the all-time series...The Mountaineers have scored 10 goals in five games this season.
