Mount Update: The Mount is 1-1 on the year, opening the season with a 4-1 victory over Towson last Friday before falling to Rider, 1-0, on Sunday. Senior Kelly Baker scored a pair of goals to lead the Mount to the Towson win while Alicia Mirando and Ragan Cote also found the back of the net in the game. Freshman Nadine Goerke had a pair of assists against Towson as well. In goal, freshmen Rachel Bourne (1-0, 0.00 GAA, 1 SV, 90 minutes played) and Vicky Cocozza (0-1, 2.00 GAA, 7 SV, 90 minutes played) have split time in the first two games.
About the Hokies: Virginia Tech is 4-0 this season and enters Friday night's game ranked 13th in the nation. The Hokies are coming off a 1-0 victory over Iowa State at the Husker Classic last weekend. Virginia Tech owns wins over UNC-Wilmington (1-0, wot), Richmond (2-0), Nebraska (3-2, ot) and Iowa State this season. Shannon Mayrose, Ashley Manning and Anne Lumpkin each have two goals to pace the offense while Jazmine Reeves and Kelly Conheeney are tied for the team lead with two assists each. In goal, Caroline Kelly has a 0.48 goals against average and a .875 save percentage while playing all 377 minutes this season.
The All-Time Series with Virginia Tech: This will be the first-ever meeting between the Mount and the Hokies. The Mountaineers are 0-2 all-time against ACC competition, losing twice to Maryland.
The Mount vs. Ranked Opponents: The Mount is 0-2 all-time against ranked opponents and the game vs. No. 13 Virginia Tech on Friday will be the highest ranked opponent the Mount has ever faced. In 2002, the Mountaineers lost to No. 15 Villanova, 6-0. The previous season, the mount lost to No. 20 Maryland, 2-0.
About the Offense: The Mount scored four goals in the season opener against Towson last Friday. The four goals were the most ever scored by a Mount team in 16 all-time meetings with the Tigers. It is the second time since September 2008 that the Mount has scored four goals in a game. The Mount downed Quinnipiac, 4-1, at home on October 23 last year.
Baker Moving Up Career Lists: Senior Kelly Baker scored twice in the Mount's 4-1 win over Towson to open the season. It was the second career two-goal game for Baker, who scored a pair against Fairleigh Dickinson in 2009. She now has 10 career goals, tied for 10th on the Mount's all-time list. Baker is also tied for 12th all-time at the Mount with 24 career points (10g, 4a).
Season Openers: The Mount won a season-opener for the second consecutive season with a 4-1 victory over Towson. The Mount is now 3-18 all-time in season-opening games.
Youth Will Be Served: The 2012 Mount women's soccer roster features 11 new players, including 10 freshmen. Overall, 17 of the Mount's 24 players are freshmen or sophomores.
In Goal: Freshmen Rachel Bourne and Vicky Cocozza have split time in goal this season for the Mount. Bourne has played the first half in each of the first two games, posting a 0.00 goals against average and one save those contests. Cocozza has played the second half in each game, recording a 2.00 goals against average and seven saves.
Preseason Poll: The Mount was picked to finish 11th in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches poll.
Celebrating 20 Years of Mount Soccer: The Mount will be celebrating 20 years of women's soccer history this season. The Mount will have an alumni game on Sunday, September 30, at 10 am and will honor a 20th Anniversary Team at halftime of the 1:00 p.m. game against Navy that day.
