Farmingdale, NY. (October 21, 2017) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team was topped by Molloy 71-34 on Saturday morning. Five different Mountaineers scored a try in the loss and Jordan Butcher led the team with eight tackles on the day.
The Mount started the scoring with a try by Liz Gamble but could not convert the kick after. The Lions would then score 15 straight points off of three tries to take a 15-5 lead before Mount St. Mary's Sloane Robinson touched the ball across the touch line to make it 15-10. Molloy added five more points from a try by Rodriguez and converted the kick that pulled them ahead 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Flanker, Cindy Abah recorded one of her two tries at the beginning of the second quarter after the Mount moved the ball down the side of the pitch. Molly answered with a try of their own from Rodriguez again but could not make the conversion kick after which made the score 27-15 midway through the second quarter. The Mount added one more try before the end of the first half but Molly scored two unanswered tries to end the first half up 37-22. Natalie Cisneros moved the ball over the touch line and Sloane Robinson converted the kick after.
The third quarter consisted of only one try from each team and both teams made the conversion kick to end the third quarter with a score of 44-29, Molloy still on top. Rachel Delatte recorded the try for Mount St. Mary's and the conversion kick was made by newly acquired Sara Wright.
The Lions scored five tries in the fourth quarter highlighted by two more from Rodriguez that helped Molloy run away with the 71-34 victory. Abah scored her second try of the match for the Mountaineers in the middle of the Lion's five tries.
The Mount combined for 51 tackles on the day. Led by Butcher who had eight, Abah had 6, and Marissa Clark had 6 as well.
Mount St. Mary's return to Emmitsburg for the final home match of the season, Saturday, October 28 against Norwich at 11:00 AM.
