Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Sacred Heart for Crucial Conference Win on Senior Day

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's University held off a late comeback attempt by Sacred Heart for a 12-10 victory on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.

With the victory, the Mount improved to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in Northeast Conference play, while Sacred Heart dropped to 4-10 on the year and 2-3 in league play.

Mount St. Mary's honored Alex Carhart, Sammie Knapp and Kelly Maloney with a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day to honor their contributions to the program and University throughout their time at the Mount.

Marley Heller tallied a team-high five points on a pair of goals and three assists for the Mount, while Jannel Daufenbach added three scores and Sammie Knapp netted a pair.

Jillian Petito stopped 10 shots in goal for the Mountaineers to collect her fourth win of the campaign.

For Sacred Heart, Alyssa Pearce led the way with three tallies and Caitlin Delaney and Emily Kick chipped in with two apiece.

Paige Hammick made six saves in the losing effort in net for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart took a 3-1 lead early in the contest behind a pair of scores from Pearce, but the Mount responded with five straight over an 11-minute stretch to jump out in front. Goals from Kelly Maloney and Emily Davis tied the tilt at 3-all, and the Mount followed with three more unanswered, including a pair from Knapp, to open a 6-3 advantage at the 10:51 mark.

Sacred Heart and the Mount traded a goal apiece in the final five-plus minutes of the period as the Mount took a 7-4 lead into the locker rooms.

With the Mount holding a 9-5 advantage midway through the second half, SHU built a comeback with three straight as Liana Doyle, Hanna Wise and Delaney got on the board to cut the team's deficit to 9-8 with 10:21 remaining.

Heller broke up the run with her second of the game, but Pearce and Kick responded with back-to-back tallies in a span of 26 seconds to even the game at 10-10 with 7:28 showing on the clock.

Daufenbach netted an unassisted goal with 5:08 left to put the Mount back up by one, and later added an insurance goal at the 1:47 mark off a feed from Heller to make it 12-10 Mountaineers.

The Mount was able to hold off SHU in the final minutes to collect the 12-10 victory.

Mount St. Mary's continues league play at Bryant on April 28 at 4 p.m.
