Clutch Shots on Final Day of Hawk Classic Push Mount Bowling to 32-12 on the Season

Millsboro, Del. (November 18, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary's women's bowling team improved its record to 32-12 on the season following the final day of the Hawk Classic hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday. The Mountaineers made clutch shots throughout the day, posting a 2-1 record and finishing in 13th place.

The top-12 teams in the standings were all nationally-ranked, as the Mount earned the top finish among unranked teams at the tournament.

Danielle Milo led the Mountaineers on Sunday with a 22.13 baker frame average, while Rebecca Dodson (21.15 baker frame average) and Tamera Stanton (18.31) helped pace the team.

The Mount dropped its opening matchup of the day to 24th-ranked Kutztown by a 4-1 margin in the best-of-seven baker matches. After dropping the first two games by scores of 195-174 and 198-188, the Mountaineers posted their best game of the round with a 212 to top Kutztown by a 21-pin margin. Kutztown was able to close out the victory with 194-179 and 173-168 wins in the final two games.

Mount St. Mary's bounced back with a tight win over Youngstown State in the second round on Sunday. The Mount took the first two games, 205-150 and 185-176, before Youngstown State won its first of the round, 186-181, in the third game. After the teams traded wins over the next two games, the Mount held a 3-2 advantage heading into game six, which the teams tied 170-170. Youngstown State evened things up with a tight 195-194 win in game seven to send things into the tie-breaking round. The Mount downed YSU by a 106-85 margin in the tie-breaker to claim the 4.5-3.5 win.

The Mountaineers were able to bounce back from their earlier loss to #24 nationally-ranked Kutztown, and top the Golden Bears, 4-2, in the final round of the tournament. After a loss to open things up, the Mountaineers won the next two games, 220-199 and 233-136, as they registered their two highest scores of the day. Kutztown was able to even things up at 2-2 following a 237-213 win in game four. The Mount closed out the victory with 184-181 and 213-171 wins in the final two games. The victory earned the Mountaineers a 13th-place finish at the tournament, as they were the only unranked team to finish above any of the nationally-ranked teams at the event.

"As disappointing as the first match of the day was, the ladies responded in terrific fashion," said Head Coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "We had a transformation today from a team that tensed up in pressure situations to a team that later thrived in those same situations. That is a huge building block for us heading into conference play, where every match seems to come down to the final frame."

The Mountaineers return to action on December 1-2 for their first Northeast Conference Tournament.
