Emmitsburg, Md. (November 6, 2018)--Eight players scored seven or more points as the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a 74-50 victory over Washington College on Tuesday night at Knott Arena. Daly Sullivan scored a team-high 14 points for the Mountaineers.
The Mount took control of the game early with a 10-1 run over the opening four minutes. Juliette Lawless converted a drive to the bucket five seconds into the game to start the run. Alexis Wooden scored the next five points, the last three on a traditional three-point play. Jatarrikah Settle added a lay-up, and Lawless a free throw to cap the run. The Shorewomen were able to cut the deficit to 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Mount St. Mary's (1-0) controlled play in the second quarter to extend the lead to 36-17 at the break. A 9-0 run to start the quarter gave the Mount a 14-point lead. Sullivan and Lawless had back-to-back lay-ups, Settle hit a free throw, Taylor Addison scored in the paint, and Michaela Harrison on the fast break to make it 24-10. A bucket by Katrina Scheuvront with 1:07 left in the half gave the Mount its biggest lead at 36-15. In the second half, the Mountaineers extended the advantage to as much as 33 points with 2:35 left in the third quarter and cruised to the victory from there.
Sullivan led the way with 14 points while Settle and Addison each finished with 10 points and seven boards. Addison added three assists and three steals in the win. Wooden added nine points and four rebounds, Bridget Birkhead eight points and five boards, and Harrison, Lawless and Rebecca Lee added seven points each in the win. Lee pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Harrison had a game-high four steals. Alexis Krahling led Washington College with eight points.
The Mount shot 42.5 percent in the game while hitting 6-of-26 (.231) from three-point range. Washington College shot 35.3 percent overall and was 5-of-15 (.333) from beyond the arc.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Friday, November 9, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Michigan.
