South Bend, Ind. (November 11, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's University women's basketball dropped its season opener at sixth-ranked Notre Dame, 121-65, on Saturday afternoon at Purcell Pavilion.
Ashley White led the Mount with 12 points in the contest on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Katrice Dickson added 11 points and four assists, and Kayla Agentowicz, Daly Sullivan and Rebecca Lee chipped in with eight points apiece.
Arike Ogunbowale of Notre Dame led all scorers in the contest with 21 points, going 8-of-14 from the floor. Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey registered 18 points each, with Shepard adding 11 points to collect a double-double.
The Mount shot 40.7 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from three-point range, while Notre Dame shot 58.4 percent overall and 50 percent from long range. The Irish held a 50-27 advantage over the Mount on the boards.
Notre Dame opened a 33-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the Mountaineers hung tough early in the second to cut into the lead.
Sullivan and White hit three-pointers in the first minute-plus of action in the second to bring the Mount within 12 points, 35-23.
Notre Dame answered with a three-pointer on the other end, but a bucket from Rebecca Lee and another three from Dickson on the next pair of possessions cut the Fighting Irish lead to 38-28.
Just under a minute later, Sullivan's second three-pointer of the quarter trimmed the Mount's deficit to single digits, 40-31, at the 5:56 mark.
The Fighting Irish tightened up on the defensive end for the remainder of the second, holding the Mount to just four points in the final five-plus minutes of the frame. They ended the half on a 16-2 run to extend the lead to 61-35 heading into the halftime break.
Dickson, Sullivan and White netted eight points apiece to lead the way in the half, and the Mount shot 54.5 percent (6-11) as a team from long range. Shepard and Mabrey paced the Irish with 26 points combined in the half.
The second half belonged to the Irish as they pushed their advantage to 93-53 at the end of three quarters of play before Dame adding 28 more in the fourth to go on for the 121-65 victory.
The Mount continues its road trip at Xavier on Tuesday, November 14 at 7 p.m.
