Lewisburg, Pa. (April 10, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's split a doubleheader at Bucknell on Wednesday, falling 2-0 in the opening game before posting a 5-4 victory in game two. THe Mountaineers improve to 18-21 on the season.
Game 1: Bucknell 2, Mount St. Mary's 0
Bucknell's Raeanne Geffert pitched a one-hitter to lead Bucknell to the 2-0 win in the opening game of the twinbill. Geffert struck out six batters in the complete-game win.
Bucknell scored twice in the bottom of the third to give Geffert all the support she would need. With two outs and no one on base, Anna Gimmestad singled, and Taylor Wolfgang followed with a double to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Sarah Baluch's single to third base scored Wolfgang to give Bucknell the 2-0 advantage.
The Mount's lone chance to score came in the sixth inning. Geffert had a perfect game heading into the inning, but saw that attempt ended when she hit Emily Kirk with a pitch with one out. Kaylee Stoner's infield single to third base broke up the no hit bid, and put runners on first and second with two outs for the Mountaineers. Geffert was able to get Mariah Godde to pop out to end the inning.
Amanda Berkley pitched a solid game for the Mountaineers, allowing two runs (one earned) while scattering five hits and striking out three in five innings. Avery Neuhart pitched a scoreless sixth for the Mount.
Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 5, Bucknell 4
Mount St. Mary's scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to earn a 5-4 win in the second game. The Mount pounded out 15 hits in the game.
Jessica Nines went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the Mount offense while Shelbee Holcomb (2-for-3), Erin Sweeney (2-for-3), Morgan Alisauckas (2-for-4) and Kaia Bonshock (2-for-4) also added multiple-hit games.
The Mount jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one more in the third. In the second inning, Holcomb singled, Bonshock reached on an error, and Nines reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Megan Black followed with a single to center to put the Mount the scoreboard, and Erin Sweeney followed with a run-scoring base hit to make it 2-0. The Bison were able to escape further damage by getting a double play and a groundout.
The Mount added to the lead in the third when Holcomb, Bonshock and Nines all singled with two outs to load the bases, and Black reached on an error to make it 3-0. Bucknell's Lauren Hadley cut the Mount lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Bucknell (20-16) scored took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mount answered with a pair of runs in the sixth to regain the lead. Sweeney doubled with one out, and pinch runner Godde moved to third on a wild pitch. Lexi Donovan followed with a squeeze bunt single to plate Godde with the tying run. Maggie Kane singled to move Donovan to third, and the Mount scored the go-ahead run on a double steal. Kane was thrown out at second, but Donovan was able to score on the play to put the Mount on top, 5-4.
Bucknell had its rally in the bottom of the seventh thwarted by a game-ending double play. Rokos singled to open the inning, and moved to second on a groundout. Wolfgang followed with a single to right field, but Kirsten Mumma fired home gun down the potential tying run a the plate. Mount catcher Nines then threw out Wolfgang at second base to end the game.
Neuhart picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief. Jordan Weaver started, allowing four runs in four innings of work.
Up Next: The Mount heads to LIU Brooklyn on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. Northeast Conference doubleheader.
