Towson, Md. (March 11, 2018)—Mount St. Mary's closed out the Towson Tiger Clash by splitting a pair of games today, defeating Fairfield, 2-1, this morning before falling to Towson, 6-1, later in the afternoon. The Mount is now 7-12 on the season.
Mount St. Mary's 2, Fairfield 1
Mount St. Mary's edged Fairfield, 2-1, in the opening game of the Towson Tiger Clash today. The Stags had the tying run at third with one out in the top of the seventh, but Katie Olson was able to close out the game for her second save of the year.
The Mount (7-12) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Kirsten Mumma led things off with a walk, and a steal of second base. After a strikeout, Shea McFarland walked to put runners on first and second, and Lindsay Heinze followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Mount the lead.
The Stags (5-8) cut into the Mount's advantage on Jessica Sieber's two-out RBI double in the top of the fifth, but Berkley struck out the next batter to end the threat.
Angelina McGuire led off the top of the seventh with a double for Fairfield, and the Mount brought in Katie Olson to finish out the game. After a sacrifice bunt moved the potential tying run to third, Olson ended the game, retiring the final two batters on a popout and a groundout to earn her second save of the season.
Freshman Amanda Berkley had a strong start for the Mount, allowing one run and five hits in six-plus innings of work to earn her second win of the season. Wade led the offense, going 2-for-2 in the game while Morgan Alisauckas, Kirk and Heinze all added hits.
Towson 6, Mount St. Mary's 1
In the afternoon game, Towson extended its win streak to 10 games with a 6-1 win over the Mount. Lindsay Heinze drove in the Mount's run in the game.
Nicole Stockinger hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to give Towson a 5-0 lead en route to the victory. The Mount (7-12) got a run back in the top of the fifth when Kaylee Stoner singled, moved to third on a Shea McFarland base hit, and scored on Heinze's single to left field. The Tigers (16-3) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-1.
McFarland went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Mount in the game while Caeley Etter and Stoner were 1-for-2. Starting pitcher Jordan Weaver took the loss, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings of work. Katie Olson pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and an unearned run.
