#MountTop20 : Nicole Pagano Sets Career Strikeout Record in Moment Number 7

Emmitsburg, Md. (July 24, 2013) -- Throughout the 2013 season, Mount junior Nicole Pagano proved one dominant pitcher can make all the difference in softball. On April 9, Pagano cemented her place in Mount history by becoming the program's all-time strikeout leader for No. 7 on our countdown of the 2012-13 Top 20 Moments.

In game two of a nonconference home doubleheader against George Washington at Our Lady of the Meadows Field, Pagano became the first Mount pitcher to reach the 400 strikeout mark, overtaking Jamie Fowler's school record of 399 set in 2009.

Head Coach Anna Nagro turned to Pagano in the top of the first inning with the Mount trailing 5-0. The junior effectively shut the door on the Colonials with 6.1 innings of scoreless softball, scattering four hits with eight strikeouts. Although the Mount was not able to make a comeback in the game, Pagano earned the strikeout record to add to her growing list of accomplishments.

Throughout the rest of the 2013 campaign, Pagano began to distance herself from other pitchers on the Mount's all-time strikeout list, finishing the season with 453 to her name.

After taking the career strikeout honor, Pagano went on to break the Mount's single-season mark finishing with 173 strikeouts on the year. Pagano's banner year moves Fowler's best season with 153 strikeouts to No. 2 in school history.

Of the team's 16 wins on the season, 14 were credited to Pagano, helping her tie the single-season record held by Fowler, Amanda Sadowl and Maria Lutz. Pagano reached her 14th victory on the final day of the season in a complete game 4-2 win over defending NEC Champion LIU Brooklyn.

Pagano, who looks to be one of the top returning pitchers in the NEC in 2014, enters her senior campaign tied for second in career wins (38), second in career ERA (2.29) and third in school history for career winning percentage (.535).
