Emmitsburg, Md. (September 14, 2019)--The Mount St. Mary's duo of Jackson Wood and Parth Sharma captured the title at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational which concluded today at the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Courts. The tournament format had a pair of players play a best-of-three that included a doubles match and two singles matches.
Wood and Sharma advanced to the finals with a 3-0 victory over Mercyhurst's Ruairidh Fraser and Kiran Richards. The Mount won the doubles point, 6-4, and then swept the two singles matches. Sharma downed Fraser (6-2, 7-6 ) while Sharma swept past Richards (6-0, 6-0).
In the other semifinal, the Mount's Jean Armstrong and Evan Hine were edged by Cormac McCooey and Unai Amiletta Gonzalez by a 2-1 score. The Mercyhurst pair won the doubles point, 7-6 (7-5), with Gonzalez clinching the match with a win over Hine (6-3, 6-1) in singles. Armstrong earned a win over McCooey, who retired do to injury (3-6, 3-4 ret. due to injury).
That injury kep McCooey and Gonzalez from competing in the finals, allowing the Mount pair of Wood and Sharma to capture the title.
Bucknell's Per Astrom and Guillermo Torres downed the Mount's Russell Armstrong and Jarrett Karnibad, 2-1, to win the back draw. The Bucknell pair won the doubles point, 6-4, with Torres earning an 8-0 win over Armstrong to clinch the match. Karnibad downed Astrom, 8-4, to win the Mount's point.
Astrom and Torres moved to the consolation final with a 3-0 win over the Mount's Jacob Berg and Dakota Fernandez. The Bucknell pair won doubles, 6-1, with Torres beating Berg (6-4, 6-2) and Astrom downing Fernandez (6-1, 6-4) in the singles matches.
Armstrong and Karnibad earned their spot in the consolation final with a 2-1 win over Mercyhurst Roy Yaron and Pranav Sadhvani. The Mount pair won the doubles match, 7-5, with both singles matches going to super tie breakers. Armstrong edged Yaron (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 ) to clinch the win for the Mount while Karnibad was edged by Sadhvani (1-6, 6-4, 1-0 ) in the other match.
The Mount men's tennis team returns to the court next weekend (Sept. 20-22) at the Loyola Invitational.
