Somerset, NJ (May 1, 2019) - Mount sophomores Jackson Wood and Parth Sharma were named to the All-Northeast Conference (NEC) First Teams while freshman Alonso Garcia tabbed to the All-NEC Rookie Team as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. Wood earned All-NEC First Team Honors in both singles and doubles while Sharma garnered All-NEC First Team for doubles.
Mount St. Mary's sophomore Jackson Wood became the first Mount player to be voted first team All-NEC since Mike Salmon in 2012. Wood ended his year tied for first on the team with 12 singles wins competing at the No. 1 flight and now has 29 singles victories in just two seasons. The Woodstock, Ga. native tallied a 3-1 conference record and owned a 6-2 season mark at the number one flight. Wood finished with the fifth highest overall win percentage (.706) in the NEC, and the second highest (.750) at the No. 1 spot. The southpaw took down Seiji Hosokowa 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4 in a come from behind win in the first flight in NEC Quarterfinals action.
The Mount sophomore duo of Wood and Sharma tabbed first on the team a 15-5 doubles record. Sharma ended the 2018-2019 season first on the team with 17 doubles wins and Wood finished right behind him in second with 15. The pair was a perfect 4-0 in conference play during the year and held a 7-2 record on the season in the number one flight. Wood and Sharma recorded the fourth highest win percentage (.750) overall in the Northeast Conference and the second highest win percentage (.778) overall in the No. 1 flight. In just NEC play the Mountaineers held the highest win percentage (1.000) with a perfect 4-0 mark in all of doubles and in the first flight spot.
The Mount St. Mary's freshman Alonso Garcia finished a strong rookie campaign tied for the team lead with 12 singles victories and added 10 doubles wins. Garcia clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win at the #4 spot over Sacred Heart's Lucca Casalduc Pla that sent Mount St. Mary's into the Northeast Conference Semifinals. The Lima, Peru native finished fifth highest overall in the NEC with a .429 in the fourth flight. Garcia tabbed a 3-3 mark in NEC competition in the No. 4 flight and nabbed third highest win percentage (.667) in the number three flight of doubles play in the NEC with his partner Gabriel Santos.
