Annapolis, Md. (October 28, 2017) -- The second day of the men's tennis Navy Gold Invitational came to a close early Saturday night from Annapolis.
In the second round of singles flight A, Brandon Wortkotter was topped 6-3, 6-2 by Princeton's Luke Gamble and Jackson Wood was edged 6-4, 6-1 by Longwood's Amadeo Blasco. Wortkotter fell to Longwood's Valentin Popescu and will play for seventh place Sunday on the consolation side of the flight. Wood picked up a walkover victory over Popescu and will play for fifth place Sunday on the consolation side as well.
On the consolation side of flight B, Parth Sharma recorded the walkover win over Loyola's Fitzmaurice but was edged 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4 by Saint Peter's Tintore. Zachary Burau topped Navy's Majikic 6-4, 7-6(8) but dropped the next match 6-4, 6-0 to Loyola's Kyle Gower. Both Sharma and Burau will play for eleventh place on Sunday.
Evan Hine was topped 6-2, 6-0 by Navy's Kahatapitiya in the second round of singles flight C. Hine fell to Longwood's Naydenov 6-2, 6-1 on the consolation side and will play for seventh place on Sunday. Jean Armstrong will play for fifteenth place after being defeated 6-4, 7-5 by Loyola's Shortell and 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 by Saint Peter's Russotto.
Chris Lindsey took one of two matches in flight D on Saturday. Lindsey defeated Loyola's Moreno 6-3, 6-2 but was topped 6-3, 6-4 by Loyola's Kelley.
The Mount duo of Wortkotter and Wood was edged 7-6(3) by Binghamton's Durham and Wong in the North bracket on the consolation side. In the Northwest bracket, Wood and Wortkotter picked up a walkover win and will play for thirteenth place during day three of the invitational.
Burau and Sharma also lost in the North bracket when they fell 7-6(3) to Navy's Lee and Majikic. The Mountaineers duo will play for fifteenth place after being topped 6-3 by Navy's duo of Kahatapitiya and Martin.
Armstrong and Lindsey will play for 25th place after receiving a first round bye in the South bracket and then defeated Loyola's Moreno and Shanker 6-3.
The final day of the invitational, October 29 will consist of the final round of singles competition and the final round of doubles competition starting at 8:00 AM.
