Men's Tennis and Women's Golf Earn NEC Spring Team Sportsmanship Awards

Somerset, N.J. (June 5, 2013) – The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis and women's golf teams were honored with Northeast Conference Spring Team Sportsmanship Awards on Wednesday. The Mount finished the school year tied for second in the NEC with three Sportsmanship Awards after the men's soccer program captured the award in the fall.

The award program, conceived by league Presidents, is designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team captain and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a predetermined set of criteria.

The 15 wins put together by the Mount's men's tennis team in the 2012-13 season were the most for the program since an 18-win season in 1991-92. Senior Mike Salomon became the program's all-time leader for singles wins with 74, while fellow senior Taylor Place earned Second Team All-NEC accolades for No. 6 singles. During the 2012-13 campaign, the Mount qualified for the NEC Semifinals.

The women's golf team took home 10th place at the NEC Championships in late April with a three-round total of 1,012 strokes. Freshman Amanda Reach tied for sixth place in the competition, which is the best finish for a Mount player in school history at the Championships. Her final score of 236 strokes, aided by four birdies in the 54-hole competition, earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team.
