Opening Serve: The Mount comes into the match with an 9-6 overall record and 1-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers defeated Coppin State on Wednesday, March 3, 7-0. The men won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches on their way to the victory. The Mount did not drop a set the entire match. Last season, the Mount beat St. Francis and Robert Morris, each by a score of 4-3. The match with Morgan State was cancelled last season.
About the Red Flash: St. Francis U comes into the match with the Mount with a 5-9 overall record, and 1-2 in conference play. The Red Flash are coming off a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. FDU won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, and swept all six singles matches in straight sets to cruise to victory.
About the Bears: Morgan State comes into the contest with the Mountaineers at 4-15 overall and 3-0 in MEAC play. The Bears come into the match after dropping a 6-1 decision to Temple on Sunday. The Owls won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the doubles point. Temple took No. 2 through 6 singles to seal the victory. The Bears lone point came at No. 1 singles, with Duk Young-Park winning 7-6(6), 7-5.
About the Colonials: Robert Morris comes into Sunday's match at 3-12 overall and 1-0 in NEC play. The Colonials most recently defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 4-0 on March 15. Robert Morris won four of the six singles matches to earn the victory. The Colonials will have a match with Allegheny on Sunday, before the match with the Mountaineers.
Senior Leadership: The team returns all six starters from a year ago, which includes three seniors. Matthew Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa./Salesianum (Del.), Taylor Place(Snellville, Ga./St. Pius X), and Mike Salomon (Haymarket, Va./Seton) lead the charge into 2012-13. Blake finished last year with a 13-13 record in singles, and teamed with Place to finish 13-11 in doubles. Place had a 10-15 singles record, while Salomon had a stellar 24-5 singles record. Paul Chae (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) is the other senior, who had a 1-4 singles record last season.
Strength Up The Middle: The team boasts a pair of juniors and sophomores. Mike Zabetakis (Finksburg, Md./Calvert Hall), and Justin Olexa (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) make up the junior duo who saw positive playing time last season. Zabetakis played mainly at the No. 3 spot, and accumulated an overall singles record of 8-17. Olexa had a 3-3 singles record. Sophomore Adam Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had a solid rookie campaign. Salam played No. 2 and had a 12-12 record.
Brotherly Love: Freshman Austin Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa./Salesianum (Del.) joins his older brother Matthew for the season. They are the first brothers to play together since Thad and Jastin Mostowtt played together in the 2009-10 season.
Up Next: The men's tennis team will host in state rival Loyola on Wednesday April 10. The match with the Greyhounds begins at 3:00 PM.
