Men's Tennis Concludes Mason Invitational Strong

Fairfax, Va. (September 23, 2012)-- The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team posted a strong showing this past weekend at the George Mason Invitational. The tournament featured the Mount, host school George Mason, Mary Washington and Christopher Newport.

Saturday action saw a slew of Mount victories early. Three of the four doubles pairs posted victories over Christopher Newport. Adam Salam and Mike Salomon posted an 8-4 win over Wagner and Tobin. Mike Zabetakis returned from injury to team with Austin Blake to win 8-5 over Sloan and Luck. Patrick McGinley and Justin Olexa won a hard fought match over Fairbanks and Smith, 9-8 (7-1). Zabetakis provided the lone singles win over George Mason's Taylor Sargent, 6-4, 6-3. 

Four Mountaineers defeated Mary Washington opponents in singles action. Senior Matt Blake got it started with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Alex Blakhin. Younger brother Austin also won 6-4, 6-1 over Kaleb Nguyen. Patrick McGinley picked up a win over Ryan Byrd 6-3, 6-3; while his doubles partner Justin Olexa won 6-4, 6-4 over Sean Gould. 

Sunday saw a trio of Mount doubles victories. Salam and Salomon got another win, this time over Mary Washington's Carey/Nguyen, 9-8 (7-3). Zabetakis and A. Blake got a win over Lunding-Johansson/Blakhin, 8-6. Finally McGinley and Olexa teammed up for another win over Byrd/Gould 9-7. 

Finally, three Mountaineers won singles matches over Christopher Newport. Adam Salam scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kyle Tobin. Salomon won 6-3, 6-2 over Chiraag Shetty. Austin Blake rounded out the weekend with a 5-4 win over Joey Manilla due to retirement by Manilla. 

The Mount returns to action Tuesday when they take on Shepherd. The match begins at 3:00 PM in Shepherdstown, WV.
