LIU Brooklyn Knocks Off Mount St. Mary’s in Overtime

Brooklyn, N.Y. (October 14, 2018) – LIU Brooklyn scored the game-tying goal with under four minutes remaining in regulation, and Huib Achterkamp netted the game-winner in overtime to give LIU Brooklyn a 2-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

Mount St. Mary's (2-8-3, 1-3-1 NEC) struck for an early goal just 24 seconds into the match. Andrew Lasso corralled a loose ball 20 yards from goal and sent a pass to Yann Kouemi just inside the box on the left side. Kouemi struck a lefty shot past the outstretched dive of Sam Ilin and into the bottom right corner for his first collegiate goal, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage.

LIU Brooklyn (9-3-1, 4-0 NEC) registered 14 shots in the opening half but wasn't able to convert for a score. Mount goalie Bobby Edwards made four saves in the frame to keep LIU off the board and send the Mountaineers into the break with a one-goal lead.

The Blackbirds, who fired off a total of 33 shots in regulation, finally broke through for the game-tying goal just as the clock ticked under four minutes to play. Filip Nordstrom lofted a free kick to the middle where Erik Johansson got his head on it but couldn't connect cleanly. The ball bounced to Zach Peterson, who finished it to knot the game up at 1-1.

Midway through the first overtime, LIU Brooklyn's Fredrik Mathisen curled a shot from 25 yards out that was ticketed for the upper 90, but Edwards made an all-out diving save to turn the shot away and keep the Mountaineers alive.

Minutes later, LIU drew a foul deep in Mount St. Mary's territory. Nordstrom sent the free kick into the box and connected with Achterkamp, who headed it into the back of the net for the game winner as LIU went on for the 2-1 victory and remained unbeaten in league play.

Edwards was busy all day in net for the Mount as the net minder made a season-high 10 saves. Ilin made just one save in the winning effort in goal for LIU.

"Today was a tough loss against a very experienced team," said Head Coach Bryan Cunningham. "The players battled, but in the end LIU was able to get the equalizer and ultimately the winner."
