EMMITSBURG, Md. – While the Mount men's basketball team nearly pulled off the upset against Maryland for our No. 14 Moment, the men's lacrosse team has made beating a ranked opponent an annual event in the last two years. The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 12-10 win against No. 16 Delaware on Feb. 25 to net the No. 13 Moment in our Top-20 Countdown.
After the Blue Hens tied the game at 9 in the fourth quarter with consecutive goals, Mount St. Mary's rolled off the next three goals to take the lead for good. Junior Andrew Scalley (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found the twine for the go-ahead goal unassisted with 5:19 left in the fourth before Brett Schmidt (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored at 2:13 and Daniel Stranix (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) capped his first career hat trick with a marker with 1:47 left. Delaware would score in the final minute, but the Mountaineers came away with the upset victory in the season opener.
The game started out as a seesaw battle with the teams being tied at 3 after the first quarter and at 5 going into the break. Mount St. Mary's scored the first two goals of the second half after Mike Adkins (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) (11:06) and Schmidt (9:04) posted tallies in the first six minutes of the stanza.
Delaware scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first of the fourth quarter to knot the score at 7 only to see Stranix (9:39) and Anthony Golden (Timonium, Md./Loyola Blakefield) (8:39) score a minute a part to restore the Mount lead at 9-7. The Blue Hens once again answered with back-to-back markers to tie the score at 9, but the Mount scored three of the final four goals to come away with the victory.
Stranix paced Mount St. Mary's with three goals while Schmidt and Scalley each posted a pair of markers in the winning effort. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Klaiber (Lafayette, N.Y./Lafayette) made his first start in between the pipes and recorded 13 saves.
With the win against Delaware, the Mountaineers were listed in the also receiving votes section of both the Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches' Poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
