Emmitsburg, Md. (February 24, 2018)--Junior Robinson scored a game-high 22 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Wagner, 73-62, on Saturday afternoon before a near-sellout crowd on Senior Day at Knott Arena. With the win, the Mount clinched the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament.
Leading 37-35 early in the second half, a Chris Wray dunk off a Robinson feed sparked a 14-to-4 run that allowed the Mount (18-13, 12-6 NEC) to take control of the game. Bobby Planutis hit a three-pointer and a Robinson jumper made it 44-35. After a lay-up by Wagner's JoJo Cooper, Jonah Antonio hit a pair of free throws and Robinson scored in the paint to give the Mount an 11-point advantage. Cooper hit a pair of free throws, but an emphatic Wray tip-dunk, and a Robinson free throw gave the Mount a 51-39 lead. The closest Wagner (21-8, 14-4) would get the rest of the way was within nine points.
Robinson, the leading scorer in the Northeast Conference at 22.2 points per game, led the Mount with 22 points and four assists. Wray added 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a career-best six blocks while Donald Carey added 14 points in the win. Planutis had a strong game with 12 points and eight rebounds while Antonio and Greg Alexander added six points each in the win. Cooper led Wagner with 18 points while Romone Saunders finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds. The Mount held Wagner to 34.3 percent shooting in the game, including a 2-of-25 (.080) from three-point range. The Mount shot 38.2 percent from teh field and was 9-of-18 (.500) from three-point range.
The Mount honored seniors Alexander, Robinson and Wray prior to the game. The trio have combined for 67 wins in their career at the Mount, the most by a senior class since the school moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89. Robinson's 22-point effort gives him 1,857 career points at the Mount, moving him into third place on the Mount's all-time scoring list. He passed Fred Carter (1,840 points) and Mike Cataline (1,838 points) today. Wray's six blocks give him 140 for his career, tying him with Michael Watson for third on the Mount's all-time list. Robinson has now scored 20 or more points 23 times this season, the most in NCAA Division I.
Wagner opened the game with a 6-1 lead before the Mount rattled of the next eight points to take the lead. Wagner answered with an 8-1 run to take a 14-10 advantage, but the Mount responded with a 9-to-2 spurt to regain the lead, 19-16. From there, the game had four ties, the last coming on a Robinson lay-up that with 45 seconds left in the half that tied the game at 31-31.
