Mount St. Mary's Races Past Sacred Heart, 91-82, Behind Rashad Whack's 35-Point Effort

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 2, 2013)--Rashad Whack poured in a career high 35 points to pace Mount St. Mary's to a 91-82 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena.

Whack scored 19 points over the first 6:45 of the game to spark the Mountaineers to a 23-9 advantage. After opening the game with back-to-back three-pointers, Whack closed the run by scoring 11 consecutive Mountaineer points, hitting three more triples while adding a pair of free throws in that stretch.

A 7-0 spurt later in the half that included a Sam Prescott three-pointer and a Josh Castellanos putback stetched the advantage to 38-15 with 7:45 left.  The Mount (9-12, 4-6 NEC) maintained that margin, heading to the locker room with a 50-27 lead.

Whack finished the opening half with 23 points as the Mount shot 63.0 percent (17-of-27) from the field and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range. 

Sacred Heart (8-13, 6-4 NEC) whittled the Mountaineer advantage to 69-59 with 5:45 left in the game, but freshman Shivaughn Wiggins drained a three-pointer on the next possession for the Mount to put the lead back to 13.

The Pioneers continued to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 82-75 on a Louis Montes lay-up with 1:05 left, but the Mount was able to seal the win by going 9-for-12 at the foul line in the final minute.

Whack finished the day 10-for-16 from the field and 7-for-10 from three-point range for his career-best 35 points.  He added four rebounds and three assists in the win. Whack is the first Mount player to score 35 points in a game since Landy Thompson scored 35 at Quinnipiac on Jan. 10, 2004.

Wiggins added 13 points, six assists and four rebounds while Julian Norfleet chipped in 10 points and five assists for the Mountaineers.

Montes paced Sacred Heart with 21 pionts while Shane Gibson added 18 poitns, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. 

The Mount shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field in the game, and held a 36-to-34 advantage on the boards.  Sacred Heart shot 61.1 percent (22-of-36) in the second half to finish the game at 51.6 percent overall.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, February 6, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Wagner.

Game Notes:  The Mount was 22-of-33 (.667) at the line in the game, and is averaging 33.7 free throw attempts over the past three games...The Mount was 13-for-26 (.500) from three-point range in the game...The Mount's nine wins surpass last season's win total of eight...MSM was 8-21 last year.
