Brooklyn, N.Y. (January 12, 2013)—Mount St. Mary's lost at LIU Brooklyn, 86-72, on Saturday afternoon at Barclays Center. Rashad Whack paced the Mount with 18 points.
Trailing by 12 midway through the second half, the Mount (6-9, 1-3 NEC) went on an 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 60-56. Xavier Owens and Whack each hit three-pointers with Shivaughn Wiggins capping the run with a pair of free throws and a lay-up in transition.
The Blackbirds (6-10, 1-3 NEC) responded, pushing the advantage back to double digits at 73-61 with 5:43 left behind five points consecutive points from C.J. Garner. LIU was able to sustain the lead for the victory.
E.J. Reed led LIU Brooklyn with 21 points and seven rebounds with Jamal Olasewere chipping in 16 points and 11 boards. Garner had 19 points and seven rebounds with Brandon Thompson added 14 in the victory. Jason Brickman had 10 assists for the Blackbirds as well.
Mount St. Mary's shot 43.3 percent from the field and was 11-for-32 (.344) from three-point range in the game. Ten of the 11 players who appeared in the game for the Mount scored, while six different players hit at least one three-point basket.
LIU Brooklyn shot 58.5 percent from the field and held a 40-to-27 advantage on the boards.
In the opening half, Whack hit a three-pointer to cut LIU's lead to 21-15, but the Blackbirds answered with nine consecutive points to take a 30-15 advantage. The Mount was able to chip into the lead a little bit to close out the half, cutting the deficit to 43-33 on a Sam Prescott three-pointer from the left corner.
Whack led the Mount with nine first-half points while Kelvin Parker hit a pair of three-pointers for six points. E.J. Reed, Brandon Thompson and Jamal Olasewere all had 10 points each for the Blackbirds in the half.
LIU shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the field in the first half while holding a 19-to-12 edge on the boards. The Mount shot 48.1 percent (13-of-27) and was 5-for-11 (.455) from three-point range.
The Mount continues its four-game road trip at Bryant on Thursday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m.
