New Britain, Conn. (January 27, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's had its three-game win streak snapped at Central Connecticut State, 71-52, on Thursday night. Lamar led the Mount (7-15, 5-4 NEC) with 17 points in the game.
The Blue Devils (13-7, 6-3 NEC) scored the first seven points of the second half to take a commanding 43-23 advantage and cruised to the victory from there.
Trice was 6-for-9 from the field in the game, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Freshmen Julian Norfleet and Josh Castellanos chipped in eight and seven points, respectively, in the loss.
CCSU shot 50.9 percent in the game while the Mount was held to 38.3 percent shooting.
Central Connecticut's trio of Ken Horton, Shemik Thompson and Robby Ptacek combined for 47 points in the win. Horton, the leading scorer and rebounder in the Northeast Conference, had 18 points and 11 rebounds with Thompson added 16 points and seven assists and Ptacek chipping in 13 points.
Central Connecticut used a 15-to-4 run to take a 20-9 advantage midway through the first half. The Mount answered with the next five points on a Trice three-pointer and a Tayvon Jackson jump shot.
The Blue Devils, however, opened the margin to 34-to-18 on a Ptacek bucket with 1:11 left in the half. The Mount again scored five consecutive points on a Castellanos three-pointer and a pair of Jean Cajou free throws with 4.6 seconds left in the half.
The Blue Devils, however, raced down court and found Terrell Allen open for a lay-up at the first-half buzzer. He was fouled on the play, but missed the charity toss, and CCSU led 36-23 at the break.
Central Connecticut State shot 55.6 percent from the field and held a 17-to-9 lead on the boards in the half. The Mountaineers shot 40.9 percent while committing 10 first-half turnovers.
Thompson, Horton and Ptacek combined for 28 points in the opening half for CCSU while Trice paced the Mount with eight.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, January 29, with a 4:00 p.m. game at Bryant University.
