Salisbury, Md. (March 27, 2018) - The Mount baseball team split doubleheader action at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountaineers edged the Hawks 4-3 in the first game and the Hawks got revenge by squeaking past the Mountaineers 2-1 in the second game.
GAME 1: Mount 4, Maryland-Eastern Shore 3
Four shutout innings from pitcher, Jordan Geber, help the Mount edge Maryland-Eastern Shore 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader. Andrew Malone and Randall Minogue recorded multi-hit games and stole one base each for the Mountaineers. Jared Urban plated two of Mount St. Mary's four runs off of a triple in the third inning.
After two scoreless innings, the Mount jumped out to the early 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Minogue doubled to left field to lead off the inning and advanced to third base off of a single from Zack Costello. Minogue and Costello were brought home to cross the plate off of a two RBI triple from Urban for the Mountaineers' first two runs of the game. Alex Kriss plated Urban later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Shore evened the game at three runs apiece after scoring runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two runners on base, Dominic DeBlaise hit a double down the left field line that brought the two runners in to score. DeBlaise scored later in the inning off of a RBI single from Jessey Valdez to make it a 3-3 game after four innings.
The seventh inning started out with a single from Malone and then Brendan Dabagian pinch ran for Malone. The next batter, Minogue, singled off of a bunt that advanced Dabagian to second. Dabagian moved up to third base off of a throwing error by the pitcher off of the Minogue bunt. Later in the inning, Dabagian scored off of a passed ball for the Mount's fourth and decisive run of the game.
Geber (1-1) received the win for Mount St. Mary's pitching four innings, giving up no runs on just two hits while striking out six batters and Chris Levere (0-5) picked up the loss for the Hawks.
GAME 2: Maryland-Eastern Shore 2, Mount 1
The Eastern Shore Hawks edged the Mount 2-1 in the second game of the doubleheader thanks to a complete game pitched by Caleb Walston. Urban and Minogue recorded two of the Mountaineers' three hits with each being a double. Urban scored the only run of the game for Mount St. Mary's and Michael Yetter pitched a complete game while only giving up two runs in the loss.
Urban led off the game with a double to right field and advanced to third off of a single from Kriss. Urban was plated later in the inning by a sacrifice fly from Patrick Causa for the Mount's only run of the game.
The Hawks scored two unanswered runs, one run in the bottom of the second, and one run in the bottom of the sixth inning in order to secure the 2-1 win. In the bottom of the second inning, Brian Cordell singled up the middle that brought DeBlaise across the plate to score Maryland-Eastern Shore's first run of the game. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, DeBlaise hit a single up the middle that plated Dwayne Marshall for the Hawks second and decisive run of the game.
Yetter (0-1) picked up the loss for the Mountaineers and Walston (1-0) received the win for Maryland-Eastern Shore. With the doubleheader split, the Mount moves to a 5-12 record and the Hawks tab a 4-21 record.
The Mount St. Mary's baseball team will head to Bryant for a three game series March 29 – 31. The first game will be on Thursday, March 29 at 3:00 PM.
