Punta Gorda, Fla. (March 1, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team overpowered St. Bonaventure 16-6 in the final game of the series on Thursday afternoon. Four Mountaineers, Patrick Causa, Vaughn Parker II, Thomas Savastio, and Randall Minogue, each had two hits on the day and combined for 12 of the team's 15 runs batted in. Causa finished the game with a triple, a homerun, and five RBI's.
The Mount jumped out to an early six run lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and four more runs in the top of the second inning. Myles Nicholson led off the top of the first by being hit by a pitch and then stealing second. The next batter, Kriss, worked a walk to put runners on second and first base with no outs. Two outs and two batters later, Nicholson stole third and Kriss stole second. Nicholson scored the first run of the game off of a throwing error by the catcher. Pat Daly brought Kriss across the plate to score the second run of the inning with a single to right field. In the top of the second inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Causa hit a three RBI triple to centerfield that plated Minogue, Nicholson, and Kriss that made it a 6-0 game.
The Bonnies scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to five. Brandon Henshaw hit a RBI double that brought Jake Miknis home to cross the plate for St. Bonaventure's first run of the game.
The Mountaineers answered by adding four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 10-1 ball game heading into the bottom of the fourth. Parker doubled to left field that plated Kriss and Causa while Parker advanced to third on Savastio's single to left field. The next batter, Minogue, singled to centerfield that brought Parker and Savastio home to score. The Bonnies scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to crawl back into it 10-4.
Mount St. Mary's again brought four runs across the plate this time in the top of the sixth inning on just three hits. After Parker and Daly got on base with a walk and a hit by pitch, Savastio hit a RBI single to centerfield that plated Parker for the first run of the inning and Minogue followed that with a RBI single of his own that brought Daly home to score. Savastio scored on a bases-loaded walk to CJ Kozorosky and Minogue was plated by a sacrifice fly, RBI from Nicholson.
St. Bonaventure plated two runs, one in the bottom of the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth but the Mount added two more runs of their own in the top of the ninth. After Kriss singled in the top of the ninth, Causa completed his day with a two-run homerun for his first homerun of the season.
Michael Kuypers (1-0) recorded his first win of the season, pitching 4.2 innings in relief and Brandon Schlimm (0-2) received the loss for the Bonnies. The Mount men take on Presbyterian Friday, March 2 at 2:30 PM.
