Port Charlotte, Fla. (February 24, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's was downed by Chicago State 7-4 on Saturday in the Mount's opening game of the Snowbird Classic. Thomas Savastio went 3 for 4 with three singles on the day and Sean Kelly added a 2 for 4 day, with a homerun and a RBI double. Freshman, Myles Nicholson recorded his first career hit in the top of the fourth with a single to the shortstop and added another single in the next inning to finish 2 for 4.
Chicago State scored four unanswered to start off the game, with two runs in the first and two runs in the third. Freund and Paciello was plated on double to right field from Lowe in the bottom of the first inning for the Cougars. Lowe plated Freund again in the bottom of the third to score the first run that inning and Paciello scored on a single by Vanitvelt to make it a 4-0 game after three innings.
The Mountaineers bounced back with four unanswered runs of their own, with one run in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning, and one more run in the seventh inning. Vaughn Parker singled to left field that scored Alex Kriss on the play in the top of the fourth. In the fifth inning, Kelly hit a solo homerun with one out to cut the deficit to two runs. Brendan Dabagian scored on the throw after Nicholson was caught stealing at second base for the Mount's third run of the game. After Savastio singled in the top of the seventh, Kelly brought him in to cross the plate with a double to center field to tie the game at 4 apiece.
Chicago State added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the game. Lowe ended the game 3 for 4 with five runs batted in for the Cougars.
Cumming (1-0) recorded the win for Chicago State and Cole Reeder (0-1) picked up the loss for Mount St. Mary's while Fitka picked up the save (3) pitching 2.2 innings with 3 strikeouts. The Mountaineers fall to 1-1 on the early season and Chicago State jumps to 3-1.
The Mount is back in action against Minnesota Sunday, February 25 at 1:30 PM in Punta Gorda, Fla.
