Emmitsburg, Md. (November 3, 2016) -- The Mount St. Mary's baseball team wrapped up its fall season this week with a best-of-three blue versus gold intrasquad scrimmage series at Straw Family Stadium.
GAME 1: Gold 3, Blue 0 (6 innings)
Sophomore second baseman Alex Kriss led off the top of the first with a single and advanced to second on a ground out, but was picked off of second to end the inning, squandering a scoring opportunity for the blue team.
In the bottom of the second, the gold squad had its first two batters reach on a double from Jordan Lawson and hit-by-pitch drawn by Sean Kelly. Seth Schubert got out of trouble by inducing a double play and striking out Thomas Esposito to keep the gold team off the board.
The gold team broke through in the bottom of the third with three runs. Mitch Sgrignoli led off the frame with a walk, Josh Lenig followed with a hit-by-pitch, and Tanner Sampson drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Jesse Archambault delivere an RBI single to score Sgrignoli for the game's first run, before Brendan Dabagian laid down a suicide squeeze, scoring Lenig and doubling the team's lead to 2-0. Dalton Clouser followed with a sac fly RBI to make the game 3-0.
Collins earned the win, striking out five in two scoreless innings. Lawson registered the save with a pair of scoreless frames and three strikeouts. Archambault pitched the opening two innings for the gold squad, yielding one hit and one walk while striking out one.
Schubert went two innings with one hit and one strikeout in the start for the blue team. Sean Flynn took the loss, allowing three runs in two innings of work, and Nate Seltsam threw one scoreless frame with one strikeout.
GAME 2: Gold 8, Blue 6 (6 innings)
The blue squad opened a 3-0 advantage in the third inning powered by Sarunas Matalavagae's double off of Dennis Stewart.
The Gold team responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie things up, 3-3. Brendan Dabagian led off the frame with a single, and Dalton Clouser followed with a walk before both runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Stewart then hit a two-RBI single to right and later scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
In the top of the seventh, Damon Nixon delivered a three-run homer to right to give the gold team a 6-3 lead, and Jordan Lawson drillled a two-run double later in the inning to pad the team's advantage to 8-3.
The blue team battled back for three runs on a Tyler Post bases loaded walk and Will Enrico two-run double, but Jesse Archambault got Matalavage to ground out to close out the 8-6 victory as the gold team earned the series sweep.
