Mount Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Central Connecticut

New Britain, Conn. (April 9, 2016) – Andrew Hinckley and Mike Appel registered complete game shutouts to lead Central Connecticut to a doubleheader sweep over Mount St. Mary's University in Northeast Conference baseball action on Saturday

GAME ONE: Central Connecticut 2, Mount St. Mary's 0

Hinckley held Mount St. Mary's University to just four hits in a complete game shutout as Central Connecticut held on for a 2-0 victory in the opener of the doubleheader. Hinckley struck out three and allowed just four baserunners in the win.

Connor Graber took the loss for Mount St. Mary's despite allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort. The senior right hander has now yielded just one earned run in two of his last three starts.

The Blue Devils grabbed a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Corey Lerche. With two outs and runners at first and second, Lerche singled through the left side to score Connor Fitzsimons and give Central Connecticut the 1-0 lead.

After being shutout in the next four innings, the Blue Devils struck for another run in the sixth, doubling their lead to 2-0. Lerche collected his second RBI of the contest with another single that scored Ryan Costello.

In the final inning, the Mount threatened as Patrick Causa reached on a two-out single, but Alex Kriss lined out to Hinckley for the final out of the game as CCSU grabbed the 2-0 win.

Causa, Dalton Clouser, Tyler Post and Zach Call registered the hits for the Mountaineers in the contest.

GAME TWO: Central Connecticut 6, Mount St. Mary's 0

Appel followed up Hinckley's complete game shutout with one of his own, throwing seven innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three to complete the doubleheader sweep for the Blue Devils

Central Connecticut grabbed a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 advantage. Dean Lockery knocked a two-run single to right in the second, and the Blue Devils followed with two more in the third on an RBI groundout by Nick Garland and a run-scoring single up the middle by Matt Martinez.

The Blue Devils added two more runs in the fifth, and Appel closed out the game to secure the 6-0 victory.
