Emmitsburg, Md. (March 9, 2013)—Mount St. Mary's baseball was defeated by UMBC, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers grabbed the early 2-0 lead and never looked back.
UMBC (1-4) got the scoring going with a Tom Gilchrist single to bring in Rob McCabe in the second inning. McCabe led off the inning with a double to left center. A Kevin LaChance RBI single in the top of the third inning brought in Anthony Gatto, after he led off the inning with a walk. This gave UMBC an early 2-0 lead which they never relinquished.
The Mount (3-8) came back with a run in the fourth inning. Tom Healy (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led off the inning with an infield single, and advanced to second on an error by Mark Esposito. Healy would be driven in by teammate Andrew Clow (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) just pitches later. Clow hit an RBI single to right field to cut the deficit to one.
However the Retrievers got another run in the eighth inning to secure the win. Gilchrist led off the inning on an error by Nick Walker (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park). He would later be brought home on a Jason Allinder single to right field.
Mac Gill (1-1) received the win for UMBC, while Scott Nickerson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) dropped to 0-2 on the year.
The Mount heads to Baltimore to take on UMBC tomorrow, March 10. Game time is 1:00 PM.
