Emmitsburg, Md. (March 28, 2023)--Mount St. Mary's used strong pitching and timely hitting in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Coppin State at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mount rallied from a 2-0 deficit to capture the opener, 3-2.
Maddie Coleman tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Mount to a 3-0 win in the nightcap. The Mountaineers have won four in a row to move over the .500 mark for the season at 13-12.
MOUNT ST. MARY'S 3, COPPIN STATE 2
Hannah Gartrell drove in a pair of runs while the Mount rallied from an early 2-0 deficit in a 3-2 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Olivia Murphy picked up the win while
Amaya Bowman pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn her first save of the season.
The Eagles (4-15) broke out on top with a pair of runs off Murphy in the top of the first inning. The first four Coppin State batters reached base before Murphy was able to settled down from there. Brissa Alvarado walked and then scored on a Aniyah Haley double. Seryna Esparza followed with a two-base hit down the left field line to make it 2-0. Manaia Fotino then laid down a perfect bunt for an infield single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Fonoti was caught stealing, and on the next pitch, Murphy recorded her first strikeout of the game. A groundout to first ended the inning.
Mount St. Mary's fought back with a run in the bottom of the first to slice the deficit in half.
Abigayle Perry walked and stole second base. She moved to third on a wild pitch, and Gartrell came through with a double to left to put the Mount on the scoreboard.
The Mountaineers evened the score in the bottom of the third inning. Julian Vincent singled to open the inning and moved to second on a Perry sacrifice bunt. Gartrell then came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to tie the score. The Mount took advantage of a Coppin State error to grab the lead in the fourth.
Mariah Godde led off the inning, and she reached second base when Coppin State's center fielder dropped her fly ball. After the Mount popped up a bunt attempt for the first out,
Vanessa Martin laced a drive off the right field fence for an RBI double to plate Godde with the eventual game-winning run.
Coppin State had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth, prompting head coach
Anna Nagro to bring Bowman into the game. Bowman escaped the jam by getting a pair of groundouts to keep the Mount on top, 3-2. Bowman then retired the Eagles in order in each to secure her first career save.

Maddie Coleman tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Mount to a 3-0 victory to complete the sweep. The Mount took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first and added two insurance runs in the sixth to earn the win.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a base hit. Perry was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Perry beat the throw home on a Gartrell fielder's choice to the third baseman to put the Mount on top, 1-0.
From that point, the game was a pitcher's duel as neither team was able to produce a hit for the next five innings. Trailing 1-0, Coppin State pitcher Brandilyn Reymer took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Anna Mae Peterson drew a walk to lead off the frame, and pinch runner
Zoe Truxon moved to second on a wild pitch. Gartrell grounded out to second to advance Truxon to third, and
Kaia Bonshock laid down a squeeze bunt to bring home Truxon to make it 2-0. Bonshock's bunt was fielded by the third baseman, but Truxon was able to beat the tag at the plate to give the Mount a two-run lead. Bonshock, who reached second on the play, was replaced by pinch runner
Julia Vincent, who promptly stole third base.
Mariah Godde followed with the Mount's first hit of the game, a single to left that put the Mount ahead, 3-0.
Tori Bowles then laced a double to right to put runners on second and third, but Coppin State brought in Shawnee Ronyank into the game in relief of Reymer, and she recorded the next two outs to keep it 3-0.
Coleman worked around a base hit in the seventh to complete her two-hit shutout to improve to 2-4 on the year.
The Mount continued its dominance in the all-time series with Coppin State, improving to 43-6 all-time against the Eagles. The Mountaineers are now 26-1 all-time at home against Coppin State and have won 21 of the past 22 meetings between the two teams.
Mount St. Mary's opens its first season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of road doubleheaders. The Mount visits Iona on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday.
