MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount baseball team opens the 2013 season with a three-game home series with Iona. Last year, the Mount finished 14-40 overall and 7-25 in the Northeast Conference. Mark Quaranta led the Mountaineers with a .333 average while chipping in four home runs and 34 RBI. On the mound, Karl Lamont (2-6, 5.02 ERA) and Thomas Williams (3-3, 6.69 ERA) were te top two starters.
ABOUT IONA: Iona posted a 21-33 overall record and a 10-14 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference last season. Chris Burke was Iona's top hitter in 2012 with a .351 average, 11 home runs and 50 RBI. On the mound, Justin Wiley was 2-4 with a 2.79 ERA in seven starts while Eddie Macaluso was 4-7 with a 5.42 ERA in 14 starts.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES WITH IONA: This will be the first meeting between the Mount and Iona since the Mount moved to NCAA Division I in 1989.
QUARANTA NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-NEC CATCHER: Mark Quaranta was named Second Team All-NEC honors at the catcher position in 2012 after leading the Mount with a .333 average this season. He added 30 runs scored, 12 doubles, four home runs and 34 RBI while having a .458 slugging percentage and a .405 on-base percentage for the year. For his career, Quaranta is a .323 hitter, tied for 10th all-time at the Mount. He is the first Mount catcher to earn All-NEC honors since Stephan Fay was Second Team All-NEC in 2006.
MORIARTY EARNS SECOND TEAM ALL-NEC HONORS AT UTILITY POSITION: Mo Moriarty was named Second Team All-NEC at the utility position in 2012. The junior split his time between right field, center field and the designated hitter spot this year, posting a .302 average with five doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI. Moriarty was the Mount's top hitter in NEC play, tallying a .312 average with a .442 slugging percentage and a .360 on-base mark.
UP NEXT: The Mountaineers head to Florida for seven games, starting with back-to-back matchups with Ohio State on Feb. 23 and 24.
