Mount Update: The Mount snapped a six-match
losing streak on Wednesday with a 4-3 victory over the University
of the District of Columbia. Andrew Marinucci clinched the victory
with his win at No. 6 singles. Patrick Plastow (No. 6) and Matthew
Blake (No. 1) also won singles matches while the Mount took two of
three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
About the Pioneers: Sacred Heart enters
Saturday's match 4-5 overall and 0-2 against NEC teams. The
Pioneers are coming off a 4-3 loss to NEC foe Bryant in a match
that was played in Puerto Rico. Sacred Heart defeated Wabash (7-0)
and Connecticut (5-2) in their other two matches in Puerto Rico.
Kirill Kasyanov plays at No. 1 singles for SHU and is 16-6 overall
and 7-2 in dual matches this season.
The All-Time Series: The Mountaineers hold a
5-3 lead in the all-time series with Sacred Heart. The Pioneers,
however, earned a 4-3 win over the Mount on March 2, 2008, in the
last matchup between the two schools. This will be the first time
Sacred Heart plays at the Mount as the other eight all-time
meetings have been on a neutral court. Mount St. Mary's defeated
Sacred Heart, 4-2, in the NEC Semifinals in 2005 to advance to the
NEC Championship match for the first time in school history.
Last Year's Meeting: Sacred Heart edged the
Mount, 4-3, in Orlando, Fla., on March 2, 2008. The Mount won the
doubles points and received singles wins from Andrew Marinucci (No.
2) and Thad Mostowtt (No. 4).
Career Numbers: Senior Andrew Marinucci has
compiled 37 individual doubles wins during his Mount career, moving
him into a tie for ninth on the school's all-time list. Marinucci
has teamed with fellow senior Patrick Plastow for an 9-6 record
this season at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore Sensations: Sophomores Matthew Blake
and Mike Salomon have compiled impressive career numbers at the
Mount over their first year and a half. Blake, who is playing at
the No. 1 spot in the order, is 26-10 (.722) during his career in
singles matches. Salomon, who is playing No. 2 singles, is 27-15
(.643) so far in singles matches at the Mount.
