HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac
handed Mount St. Mary's its first Northeast Conference (NEC) loss
of the year with a 19-5 victory in women's lacrosse action on
Sunday.
Katelyn Catanese (Huntington,
N.Y./St. Anthony's) paced the Mount (4-9, 4-1 NEC) with two goals
while Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) dished out the
assists on both of her fellow seniors tallies in the
loss.
Devon Gibney paced the Bobcats
(7-2, 3-1 NEC) with four goals and two assists. Katie Latonock
posted two goals and four assists and Marissa Caroleo found the
twine four times in the winning effort.
After Mount St. Mary's took a
quick advantage, Quinnipiac went on a run and never looked back for
its third-straight win against the Mountaineers.
Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park,
Md./St. Mary's) gave the Mount a 1-0 advantage on a free-position
goal at 1:53.
The Bobcats answered by scoring
the next eight goals to grab an 8-1 lead. Gibney tied the contest
on an 8-meter goal at 2:44 before Latonick gave Quinnipiac the lead
for good unassisted at 3:11. After Latonick set up Nicole Fiore at
4:17, Tiffany Manzi converted a free-position chance at 5:40 and
Lyndsey Banach found the twine unassisted at 10:30 for a 5-1
advantage. Christine Sinnigen registered the Bobcats third 8-meter
goal in the first half at 17:04 before Ashley Valentine scored off
a Gibney helper at 18:38 and then Gibney squirted the ball into the
net off a Latonick feed at 20:48 for a seven-goal
advantage.
Ashley Johnson (Arvada,
Colo./Arvada West) momentarily halted the Quinnipiac run with an
unassisted tally at 21:30, but the Bobcats closed the first period
with four-consecutive goals to go into halftime with a 12-2
lead.
Caroleo started the surge with
her first goal of the afternoon unassisted at 22:52. Latonick
scored off a Sinnigen pass at 23:48 and then the junior set up
Caroleo at 25:51. Gibney, who started the offensive burst for
Quinnipiac, ended the first stanza with her second marker off a
Fiore assist at 26:50.
Mount St. Mary's opened the
final stanza with back-to-back Waraksa to Catanese connections at
36:19 and again 22 seconds later to trim the margin to
12-4.
The Bobcats answered by scoring
the next five goals to grab a 17-4 margin after Gibney (37:23),
Caroleo (40:17), Fiore (41:11), Manzi (45:00) and Banach (49:59)
each scored in a span of 12
minutes and 36 seconds.
Nicole Price (White Hall,
Md./North Harford) stopped the string of five unanswered tallies
with an 8-meter goal at 52:46, but Caroleo and Kaitlyn Kelly scored
in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
Quinnipiac held a 27-23
advantage in shots, but the difference in the game was that the
2008 NEC Defensive Player of the Year Hannah Nelson made 14
saves.
Gauthier posted four draw
controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover while Lucy Pompa
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) added four draw controls and a ground
ball in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to
action at the Waldron Family Stadium against Sacred Heart on
Thursday in the final regular season home game. Prior to the game,
the Mount will honor seniors Catanese, Gauthier, Waraksa, Caitlin
Preas (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Kathleen
Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall).
