Smithfield, R.I. (October 27, 2012)—Tommy Gruschow and Chris Swisko each earned All-Northeast Conference honors to pace the Mount St. Mary's men's and women's cross country teams at the Northeast Conference Championships hosted by Bryant University on Saturday afternoon. The men and the women's team each finished in sixth place at the meet.
Gruschow finished in second place overall, the highest finish by a Mount runner since Daniel Kinyua won the individual title in 1998. Gruschow completed the 8-kilometer course in a time of 25:08.16 to finish second behind Central Connecticut State's Colby Delbene.
Swisko had a time of 25:40.25 to finish in 10th place overall to earn All-NEC honors as well. Sean Caskey was the Mount's third-fastest runner, finishing 29th overall with a mark of 26:32.21. Shane Holcomb (51st, 27:17.33) and Kevin Pitts (56th, 27:24.41) rounded out the Mount's top five.
Central Connecticut State took home first place with 72 points, trailed by Monmouth (78), Quinnipiac (79), Sacred Heart (109), St. Francis (N.Y.) (127), the Mount (146), Wagner (165), Robert Morris (229), Saint Francis (Pa.) (229), Bryant (242) and Fairleigh Dickinson (264).
The Mount women's team was paced by McKenzie Doyle, who just missed All-NEC honors by finishing in 15th place in a time of 18:37.40 on the 5-kilometer course. Megan Schott was 19th overall with a time of 18:50.69 with Megan Kinsella placing 22nd in a time of 18:55.21. Madeline Rico (48th, 19:54.27) and Colleen Smith (77th, 20:56.53) finished out the Mount's top five runners at the meet.
Quinnipiac won the women's meet with 46 points, followed by Sacred Heart (54), Bryant (82), Monmouth (117), Central Connecticut State (140), Mount St. Mary's (163), Robert Morris (167), Wagner (202), Saint Francis (Pa.) (217), St. Francis (N.Y.) (242) and Fairleigh Dickinson (314).
