Mount St. Mary's Cross Country Back in Action at the Towson Invitational on Friday
The Mount men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Friday at the Towson Invitational held at Oregon Ridge Park.
TIME: 4:30 p.m.
THE COURSE: The men will be running a five-mile course while the women will be running a 5-kilometer race.
PLACE: Oregon Ridge Park, Hunt Valley, Md.
LAST TIME OUT: Sophomore Tommy Gruschow finished in sixth place to pace the Mount cross country teams at the Nassaney Invitational hosted by Bryant University on September 8. The Mount finished in sixth place while the women were in 11th. The field featured nine Northeast Conference schools in a preview of the course of this year's NEC Championships. The Mount men were fourth of the nine NEC squads while the women were sixth among NEC teams.
Gruschow finished the 8-kilometer course in a time of 25:49.4, finishing sixth overall, but first among NEC competitors. Chris Swisko was 31st with a time of 26:57.7 and Chris Jewell 32nd with a time of 26:58.0. Rounding out the Mount's top five were Sean Caskey (54th, 27:44.9) and Shane Holcomb (78th, 28:32.7).
On the women's side, Megan Kinsella was the Mount's top runner, finishing just ahead of teammate McKenzie Doyle. Kinsella was 52nd overall with a mark of 19:42.4 with Doyle placing 54th with a time of 19:50.2. Megan Schott (60th, 19:56.6), Madeline Rico (75th, 20:16.9) and Colleen Smith (79th, 20:29.2) rounded out the top five for the Mountaineers.
LAST YEAR AT THE TOWSON INVITATIONAL: Dylan Bernard finished in second place to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Towson Invitational last year. Freshman McKenzie Doyle's sixth-place finish helped the Mount women to a third-place finish at the meet.
Bernard finished the five-mile course in a time of 26:06.41 to lead the Mountaineers. Chris Swisko finished in 10th place with a mark of 26:38.86 as the Mount's second-fastest finisher. The rest of the Mount's top five included Tommy Gruschow (17th, 27:49.56), Jesse Albright (27:54,58, 18th) and Kevin Pitts (22nd, 28:08.93).
The Mount men finished in second place with 59 points behind first-place Navy (19). The rest of the top five teams included Seton Hall, UMES and Loyola.
Doyle finished the 5-kilometer course in a time 19:23.20 to finish as the Mount's top runner. Megan Kinsella was the Mount next-fastest runner, finishing 14th with a time of 19:56.46. The remainder of the top five for the Mountaineers were Colleen Smith (21st, 20:55.97), Kathryn Franke (26th, 21:03.53)and Stephanie Joson (21:55.94).
The Mount finished in third place at the meet behind Towson and Hampton.

PRESEASON POLLS: The Mount men's cross country team was picked fourth and the women eighth in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.
UP NEXT: Mount St. Mary's will participate in the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, September 29. The race will be held at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va., and will begin at 10:00 a.m.
