Jenny Smith Leads Women's Tennis on First Day of Mount Invitational
Emmitsburg, Md. (September 14, 2012)-- Sophomore Jenny Smith headlined the first day of the Mount Invitational with a win in Flight C Singles.
In Flight A, Sam Pinchoff lost a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Loyola's Haleigh Morgus. Kelly Conroy also suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Maria Cioffi of Bucknell. Both Conroy and Pinchoff will play in the back draw of the tournament tomorrow.
Flight B saw senior Renee Deane lose a hard fought three set match to Scarlett Hoy of Loyola. Hoy won the first set 7-5, but Deane bounced back, picking up a 6-7 win. Hoy put it away with a 10-5 third set win. Senior Carly Landini also suffered a loss to Christine Schneider of Bucknell 6-3, 6-2. Deane and Landini will participate in the back draw tomorrow.
Flight C Singles was capped off with a win by sophomore Jenny Smith. Smith downed Elizabeth Morgan of Bucknell 6-2, 6-2 and will face Ellie Fraser of Bucknell tomorrow. Fraser was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Claire Oswald of Loyola. Liz Rossi lost to Steph Pino of Bucknell 7-6, 6-1 and will face Sam Madnick of Bucknell tomorrow in the back draw.
Flight D saw two Mountaineer victories. Sophomore Danielle Nguyen picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Loyola's Gabby DeCarvalho. Nguyen will face fellow Mount teammate Taylor D'Agostino. D'Agostino was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Tiffany Hughes of Morgan State. Freshman Isabella Draper lost her first collegiate match 6-2, 6-2 to Kristen Bishof of Bucknell.
Action continues tomorrow morning, starting at 9:30 AM. The day will start off with the first round of doubles, followed by the second round of singles, and concluding with the second round of doubles play.
