Women's Swimming Concludes First Half Of Season At James Madison On Saturday; Dukes Broadcasting Meet For Free

opening dive... The Mount women's swimming team will head to James Madison on Saturday for its first-ever competition against the Dukes. Radford will also participate in the event. It will be the third meeting between the Mountaineers and the Highlanders dating back to the 2008-09 season. While this marks just the third dual-meet competition between the two teams, Mount St. Mary's has been competing in the Radford Invitational for the last four years. The meet will be streamed for free at jmusports.com and will be archieved on Sunday.

last time against radford… Despite winning eight of the 11 events, Mount St. Mary's fell to Radford 105-100 on Dec. 4, 2010. Patricia Yam won three events to pace the Mount in the loss. Yam won the 200 free (2:14.66), the 100 fly (1:07.86) and the 400 free (4:48.90). Cat Coppler won the 800 free (9:38.57) and the 100 back (1:08.26) while Courtney Griffith notched a first-place finish in the 100 free (1:00.16). Griffith, Molly Kristiniak, Mollie Walsh and Joanna Hale won the 200-medley relay (2:09.64), and Walsh, Coppler, Jessica Gardner and Hale teamed up to win the 200-free relay (1:56.79). Walsh finished second on the 200 IM (2:37.45), Hale and Kristiniak each placed third in the 50 free (29.40) and the 100 breast (1:27.96), respectively.

last splash… Mount St. Mary's finished fourth at the Radford Invitational on Nov. 17. Junior Cat Coppler won the 200 back (2:07.32) and finished second in the 200 free (1:55.48) second in the 100 back (59.52) and eighth in the 1650 free (18:05.55). The junior also helped the Mount to first-place standings in the 200-free relay (1:37.38) and the 400-free relay (3:32.41 in meet-record fashion.  Anne Thelen, Mollie Walsh and Courtney Griffith competed in the 200-free relay with Coppler while Erin Regan joined Coppler, Walsh and Griffith for the win in the 400-free relay. Griffith placed second in the 100 free (53.09), third in the 50 free (24.51) and third in the 100 back (59.57). Regan finished second in the 200 fly (2:06.39), third in the 500 free (5:08.42) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:12.75)

next time in the water... This meet concludes the 2012 portion of the schedule. The Mount returns to action on at home against Duquesne on Jan. 12.

coppler honored… Cat Coppler was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimmer of the Week for the week of Nov. 15-21. It is the junior's second career weekly honor. Coppler was the lone Mount swimmer to win an individual event at the Radford Invitational, and was part of two winning relays on the way to leading Mount St. Mary's to a fourth place team finish. The junior also recorded two second-place finishes, and swam in five finals. Coppler won the 200 back with a time of 2:07.32 and helped the Mount to relay wins in the 200 free (1:37.38) and the 400 free (3:32.41), as well as a new meet record in the 400 free relay after she swam the lead-off leg. She took second in the 200 free in a time of 1:55.48 and the 100 back in 59:52. It marks the third time in program history the Mount has earned NEC Swimmer of the Week honors. Coppler and senior Courtney Griffith took home the award for the first week of the 2010-11 campaign. Griffith was also named the NEC Swimmer of the Week for the week of Nov. 9-15, 2011. Katie Fives was the first Mountaineer to earn recognition from the NEC when she was named NEC Diver of the Week in 2008.

preseason poll… The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team has been picked fifth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time champion Saint Francis (Pa.) picked up five of the seven first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Bryant and Wagner each received a first-place nod to be picked second while Central Connecticut State, the Mount, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Sacred Heart rounded out the seven-team poll.

home pool advantage in 2012-13... Mount St. Mary's will host three events this season, starting against VMI and McDaniel on Oct. 27. The Mount will also host Duquesne on Jan. 12 and Loyola on Feb. 2. The Mount holds a 17-6 mark at home, including a 6-0 record in 2010-11, 4-1 record in 2008-09 and a 3-1 standing in 2007-08.

about the team... Head coach Neil Yost's 2012-13 team is comprised of one senior (Courtney Griffith) and seven juniors (Cat Coppler, Emily Dargay, Jessica Gardner, Nicole Helmick, Victoria Shaw, Mollie Walsh and Patricia Yam) and five sophomores (Rebecca Kasda, Amanda Malmstrom, Catherine Sukovich, Erin Regan, Anne Thelen) and three freshmen (Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell, Kaitlyn Warner).

record-setting season… Sophomore Erin Regan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet after winning the 200 fly and also finished second in the 100 fly last season. It was the first time a Mount swimmer won an event at the championships and the first major award for the team. Senior Courtney Griffith finished third in the 50 free and the 100 fly to earn a pair of All-NEC third-team selections while senior Patricia Yam nabbed All-NEC third-team honors for her third-place standing in the 200 fly for the second-straight season. The Mount finished the NEC Swimming & Diving Championships with a program-record 348 points.

local product... Senior Courtney Griffith hails from Westminster, Md. A graduate of Westminster High School, the sophomore was a member of the Eagles Club at McDonough High School for four years. The senior became the first player in program history to earn an All-Northeast Conference selection after finishing second in the 100 fly (56.06) in 2011. She also placed fourth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free as a sophomore and was third in the 50 free and 100 fly as a junior..

new to the mountain... Head coach Neil Yost has added three newcomers to his 2012-13 roster. Freshmen Lena Castro Marquez and Katie Powell joined the team this season.

about the coach... Neil Yost, who enters his eighth season, became the first head coach in program history. Yost came to the Mount with nine years of coaching experience. Since 2002, Yost was the men's and women's swimming coach at Waynesboro High School. He also served as the head swimming coach and aquatics director at the Waynesboro Area YMCA. Before coaching at Waynesboro High School he was the aquatics director at the Westport/Weston YMCA from 2001-02. He was also the assistant swimming coach at Bloomsburg University and the head coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics Club for two years after serving as an assistant coach for two years. Yost started his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics High School from 1996-2000.
