Women's Swimming Heads To Saint Francis (Pa.) On Saturday

opening dive... The Mount women's swimming team travels to Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday for the seventh meeting between the two programs. The Red Flash has won the previous six matchups.

last time against the red flash… Saint Francis (Pa.) defeated Mount St. Mary's 168-91 on Oct. 17, 2011. Erin Regan paced the Mount with a first and two second-place finishes. The freshman earned the Mountaineers first win of the day in the 200 fly (2:28.40) and registered second-place standings in the 800 free (9:40.73) and the 100 fly (1:08.01). Cat Coppler posted a first in the 50 free (28.60), a second in the 200 free (2:13.54) and a third in the 400 free (4:48.89). Patricia Yam notched the other victory on the afternoon in the 200 IM (2:37.19) while also placing third in the 200 back (2:33.40). Anne Thelen recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 breast (1:22.67) and the 100 free (1:03.67). Amanda Malmstrom placed third in the 200 IM (2:44.96). Coppler, Mollie Walsh, Regan and Thelen teamed up to win the 200-free (1:53.52) while Walsh, Thelan, Yam and Malstrom placed third in the 400-medley relay (4:48.91).

last splash… Anne Thelen, Kaitlyn Powell, Erin Regan and Cat Coppler teamed up to finish third in the 500-free relay to pace the Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team at the Potomac Relays Sept. 28. The quartet of Thelen, Powell, Regan and Coppler finished third in the 500-free relay with a time of 4:48.00 to notch the best finish at the season-opening event. Regan and Powell also teamed up to finish fourth in the 1000 free (10:51.22). Coppler, Kaitlyn Warner, Regan and Thelen finished fifth in the 200-medley relay (1:56.31) while Regan, Amanda Malmstrom and Powell placed fifth in the 300-fly relay (3:09.74). Coppler, Thelen, Malmstrom and Catherine Sukovich posted the squad's third fifth-place standing on the afternoon in the 200-free relay (1:46.11). Lena Castro Marquez, Malmstrom, Victoria Shaw and Emily Dargay finished sixth in the 800-free relay (8:48.30). Castro, Coppler and Rebecca Kasda placed sixth in the 300-back relay (3:20.80) while Warner, Jessica Gardner and Sukovich teamed up to finish sixth in the 300-breast relay (3:59.22). Warner, Shaw, Thelen and Malmstrom finished sixth in the 400-medley relay (4:35.65). The event marked the collegiate debut for Castro, Powell and Warner.

next time in the water... The Mount returns to action at home against VMI and McDaniel on Oct. 27.

preseason poll… The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team has been picked fifth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time champion Saint Francis (Pa.) picked up five of the seven first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Bryant and Wagner each received a first-place nod to be picked second while Central Connecticut State, the Mount, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Sacred Heart rounded out the seven-team poll.

home pool advantage in 2012-13... Mount St. Mary's will host three events this season, starting against VMI and McDaniel on Oct. 27. The Mount will also host Duquesne on Jan. 12 and Loyola on Feb. 2. The Mount holds a 17-6 mark at home, including a 6-0 record in 2010-11, 4-1 record in 2008-09 and a 3-1 standing in 2007-08.

about the team... Head coach Neil Yost's 2012-13 team is comprised of one senior (Courtney Griffith) and seven juniors (Cat Coppler, Emily Dargay, Jessica Gardner, Nicole Helmick, Victoria Shaw, Mollie Walsh and Patricia Yam) and five sophomores (Rebecca Kasda, Amanda Malmstrom, Catherine Sukovich, Erin Regan, Anne Thelen) and three freshmen (Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell, Kaitlyn Warner).

record-setting season… Sophomore Erin Regan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet after winning the 200 fly and also finished second in the 100 fly last season. It was the first time a Mount swimmer won an event at the championships and the first major award for the team. Senior Courtney Griffith finished third in the 50 free and the 100 fly to earn a pair of All-NEC third-team selections while senior Patricia Yam nabbed All-NEC third-team honors for her third-place standing in the 200 fly for the second-straight season. The Mount finished the NEC Swimming & Diving Championships with a program-record 348 points.

local product... Senior Courtney Griffith hails from Westminster, Md. A graduate of Westminster High School, the sophomore was a member of the Eagles Club at McDonough High School for four years. The senior became the first player in program history to earn an All-Northeast Conference selection after finishing second in the 100 fly (56.06) in 2011. She also placed fourth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free as a sophomore and was third in the 50 free and 100 fly as a junior..

new to the mountain... Head coach Neil Yost has added three newcomers to his 2012-13 roster. Freshmen Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell and Kaitlyn Warner each joined the team this season.

about the coach... Neil Yost, who enters his eighth season, became the first head coach in program history. Yost came to the Mount with nine years of coaching experience. Since 2002, Yost was the men's and women's swimming coach at Waynesboro High School. He also served as the head swimming coach and aquatics director at the Waynesboro Area YMCA. Before coaching at Waynesboro High School he was the aquatics director at the Westport/Weston YMCA from 2001-02. He was also the assistant swimming coach at Bloomsburg University and the head coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics Club for two years after serving as an assistant coach for two years. Yost started his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics High School from 1996-2000.
