Mount Pleasant, Mich. (September 16, 2017) – Lexi Pelafas tallied three goals to power Central Michigan past Mount St. Mary's University, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex.
Central Michigan jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage with a pair of goals in the opening five and a half minutes of play. Savannah Beetcher got the team on the board with the game's first goal, and Pelafas followed a goal off a penalty kick just over two minutes later.
The Mount cut its deficit to 2-1 before the half on Jenna West's fifth goal of the season. The Mountaineers forced a turnover and West worked her way into the box before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Zoie Reed and into the back of the net, bringing the Mount within a score.
Still holding a one-goal lead midway through the second half, Pelafas struck again with a header for her second goal of the contest as she pushed the Chippewas' lead to 3-1 in the 69th minute.
Just eight minutes later, Pelafas completed her hat trick and extended CMU's lead to 4-1. Mary Carlson and Lauren Sherry picked up assists on the play.
With 1:50 remaining in the tilt, sophomore Jaylyn Chandler converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season. Despite the goal, CMU was able to close out the final minutes of play and go on for the 4-2 victory.
Charlotte Elrod made six saves in her second start of the season in net for the Mount, while Reed stopped a pair of shots for CMU in the win.
CMU improved to 5-2-1 overall with the win, while Mount St. Mary's dropped to 3-6 on the year.
