Hampton, Va. (August 27, 2017) – The Mount St. Mary's University women's soccer team exploded for four goals in the second half to top Hampton 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the HU Soccer Complex. The Mount moved to 3-1 on the year with the win, marking the team's best start through the opening four games of a season in program history.
The Mountaineers' previous best starts to a season were in 1998 and 2005, when they opened each of those campaigns at 2-1-1.
In the 67th minute, Jenna West added to the Mount's lead with an unassisted tally. Under two minutes later, West struck again as she found the back of the net off a cross from McCree, making it a 3-0 Mountaineers. The goal for West was her fourth in the last two games. McCree, who tallied her first career point in Friday's game at Howard, registered her third assist in the last two contests.
Hampton finally got on the board with just a few minutes remaining in the contest as Michelle Zilberman converted a penalty kick to trim the Mount's advantage to 3-1.
Kayla Hughes netted her second goal of the season on a breakaway just over a minute later to make it 4-1 Mountaineers.
The Mount outshot Hampton 18-13 in the contest and held a 6-1 advantage on corners.
Maggie Barron earned her third win of the year in net with a season-high seven saves. Haley Nelson stopped four shots in the losing effort for Hampton.
The Mount stays on the road for a matchup at Rutgers on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m.
