Emmitsburg, Md. (October 28, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's fell to visiting Monmouth, 2-0, in a Northeast Conference women's soccer match at the Mount's Waldron Family Stadium on campus. The Mount finishes the 2012 season with a 7-11-1 overall record and a 2-7-1 mark in the Northeast Conference.
The Hawks (10-6-2, 7-2-1 NEC) opened the scoring 3:58 into the game when Dana Costello took a through pass from Monique Plescia and beat Mount goalkeeper Rachel Bourne.
The Mountaineers had two great scoring opportunities in the following minutes. The first came when Alicia Mirando had her shot denied by Monmouth keeper Jocelyn McCoy. The rebound came to senior Carly Deegan, who put the shot just wide to the left.
A few minutes later, Kelly Baker had a one-on-one chance with McCoy, but saw her shot tipped away by the keeper.
In the 15th minute, the Plescia scored on a rebound of a Costello free kick from just outside the box to make it 2-0. Monique Goncalves picked up an assist on the play when she tapped the ball to Costello for the free kick.
Deegan had another good scoring opportunity in the second half, but could not get her foot on a cross from Jackie Corley.
Monmouth outshot the Mount, 12-to-8, in the game and held a 7-to-2 edge in corner kicks. Vicky Cocozza made two saves in the second half for the Mount while Bourne had three in the opening half. McCoy had four saves for the Hawks.
