New Britain, Conn. (October 12, 2012)—A strong second half push came up short as Mount St. Mary's lost at Central Connecticut State, 1-0, in women's soccer action on Friday night at CCSU Soccer Field. The Mountaineers outshot the Blue Devils, 10-to-3, in the second half, but was unable to get a game-tying score.
The Blue Devils (2-11-1, 1-5-0 NEC) scored the lone goal of the game 15:53 into the contest when Julie Lavoie tallied her first score of the year. Danica Foglio earned the assist on the play.
Early in the second half, Jackie Corley had a shot denied by CCSU goalkeeper Nikola Deiter. Just 45 seconds later, the Mount (7-6-1, 2-2-1 NEC) was awarded a penalty kick, but Kelly Baker's shot was off the mark.
Another outstanding scoring chance came in the 69th minute when Baker's header off a Corley corner kick struck the cross bar. Sam Manson had a chance on the rebound, but saw her shot blocked away by the CCSU defense.
Jackie Corley had the last scoring chance, but saw her shot denied by Deiter with just under four minutes left.
The Mount held a 16-to-8 edge in shots in the game and had six corner kicks to CCSU's three. Deiter made eight saves in the victory while Vicky Cocozza had three saves for the Mount in the game.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Quinnipiac.
