Emmitsburg, Md. (October 5, 2012)--Kate Murphy and Keriann McGettigan each had a goal and an assist to lead Mount St. Mary's past Robert Morris, 3-0, in women's soccer action on Friday night. With the win, the Mount improves to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the Northeast Conference.
McGettigan and Murphy teamed to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the first half. Murphy lofted a free kick from near midfield into the box, where McGettigan headed the ball past Robert Morris goalkeeper Becky Schoenecker to put the Mount ahead in the 29th minute.
Murphy put the Mount ahead early in the second half when she scored on a long free kick. With the ball right in front of the Mount bench about 35 yards out, Murphy lofted a shot that sailed over Schoenecker's head for a 2-0 advantage.
Just over five minutes later, the Mount put the game away when Alicia Mirando took a long ball from Brinley Watts and buried her seventh goal of the year to put the Mountaineers up 3-0. McGettigan and Watts were credited with assists on the play.
The goal was Mirando's team-leading seventh goal of the season. The seven goals are the most by a Mount player since Karen Farrar had seven in 2005.
Robert Morris (0-12-1, 0-3-1 NEC) outshot the Mount, 13-to-9, in the game, but the Mountaineers held an 8-to-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeepers Vicky Cocozza and Rachel Bourne combined for the shutout victory, their second combined shutout of the season. Cocozza made one save in the first half with Bourne picking up three stops in the second half. Schoenecker made fives saves in the loss for the Colonials.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, October 7, with a 12:00 p.m. home game against Sacred Heart.
Game Notes: The Mountaineers snapped a five-game losing streak to Robert Morris with the victory...The Mount leads the all-time series, 12-8-2...The Mount's 2-1 start in NEC play is the team's best since opening with a 3-0 mark in 2002.
