Loretto, Pa. (September 21, 2012)—The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team opened Northeast Conference play with a 3-0 loss at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon. Freshmen goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza and Rachel Bourne combined to make nine saves in the loss.
Two-time NEC Player of the Year Tesa McKibben led the Red Flash (4-4-1, 1-0 NEC) to the victory, posting a goal and two assists in the game.
The Red Flash) opened the scoring 7:58 into the game when Eloa Nascimento scored. McKibben chipped a ball over the wall on a free kick to Nascimento, who beat Cocozza to give Saint Francis (Pa.) the lead.
McKibben set up the second goal of the game as well when she took the ball down the left side of the field, put a pass across to Hallie Rexter, who scored to give Saint Francis a 2-0 lead with just under five minutes left in the half.
Kelly Baker had a pair of shots for the Mount (4-4, 0-1 NEC) in the final minutes of the half that were stopped by Saint Francis (Pa.) goalkeeper Brianna Butcher.
In the second half, McKibben rounded out the scoring in the 69th minute when she tapped home the rebound off a Barbara Maros de Carvalho shot.
Saint Francis (Pa.) held a 24-to-13 advantage in shots in the game and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Cocozza had seven saves with two goals allowed while Bourne had a pair of saves with one goal allowed for the Mountaineers. Butcher had seven saves for the Red Flash.
The Mount is back in action on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference matchup at Delaware State.
