Emmitsburg, Md. (September 14, 2012)--Kelly Baker scored twice to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over visiting VMI on Friday night at Waldrom Family Stadium on campus.
The Mount (4-3) broke on top in the 23rd minute when Baker scopped up a rebound and tapped the ball into the empty net. Andrea Bujacich started the play by hammering a shot from 20 yards out that was bobbled by the goalkeeper, allowing Baker to get the goal.
Baker made it 2-0 when she converted a penalty kick with 14:22 left in the first half. Baker was fouled in the box to earn the penalty. It was Baker's second goal of the game, marking the second time this year she has scored twice in the same game.
The Mount made it 3-0 right before the end of the half on a Keriann McGettigan goal. Kate Murphy lofted the ball into the box where Melissa Rowan headed the ball back to McGettigan, who beat the keeper to the lower left for her first goal of the year.
Sam Manson's first collegiate goal in the in the 71st minute rounded out the scoring. Manson tapped in a cross from Carly Deegan to push the advantage to 4-0. Deegan's assist was her first collegiate point.
The Mount's 4-3 start to the season matches the best seven-game start in program history. Mount St. Mary's was also 4-3 to open both the 1994 and 1996 seasons. The Mount has 14 goals on the year, already surpassing last season's total of 13.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, September 21, when the team opens Northeast Conference play at Saint Francis (Pa.)
Game Notes: The Mount is 2-0 all-time against VMI with both wins coming at home...The Mount has scored four goals in a game three times this year.
