Mount St. Mary's Hosts VMI on Friday Night
Mount Update: The Mountaineers saw their two-game win streak snapped with a 2-0 loss at Bucknell on Tuesday night. The Mount enters the game with a 3-3 record on the season. Alicia Mirando leads the Mount with four goals and eight points while Ragan Cote has three goals and one assist for seven points. In goal, Rachel Bourne (1.00 GAA, 8 SV) and Vicky Cocozza (2.33 GAA, 23 SV) have each played a half in the first six games. The Mount is looking to improve to 4-3 on the season for just the third time in program history. The last Mount team to open the year with a 4-3 mark was the 1996 squad.
About the VMI: The Keydets enter Friday's game with a 1-3 record after a 6-1 loss at Old Dominion this past Sunday. Christelle Ndongo and Erika Boggs each have a goal on the year to pace the offense. In goal, Mackenzie Harrmann has started all four games, registering a 2.56 goals against average and a .565 save percentage. VMI is 0-1 on the road so far this year.
The All-Time Series with VMI: The Mount won the only meeting between the two schools, 1-0, on September 3, 2010, at Waldron Family Stadium. Kaylyn Mahon scored on a second-half header to lift the Mountaineers to the victory. The Mount held a 22-to-3 advantage in shots in the game. Last year's scheduled meeting between the teams at VMI was cancelled due to the weather.
The Offense: Mount St. Mary's has scored 10 goals over the first six games of the season. The total is just three shy of last year's season mark of 13 goals. The Mountaineers have scored four goals in a game twice this year (4-1 victories over Towson and Saint Peter's). It is the first time since the 2006 season the Mount has had two or more four-goal games in the same season.
Good Start to the Season: The Mount will be looking to move to 4-3 on the year with a win against VMI. The Mount has started the season with a 4-3 record after seven games just two times in program history (1994 and 1996).
The Mount vs. Ranked Opponents: The Mount is now 0-3 all-time against a ranked opponent after the 4-0 loss to No. 13 Virginia Tech on August 31. In the two other matchups with ranked teams, the Mount fell to No. 15 Villanova (6-0 in 2002) and No. 20 Maryland (2-0 in 2001. In 2002, the Mountaineers lost to No. 15 Villanova, 6-0.
Baker Moving Up Career Lists: Senior Kelly Baker scored twice in the Mount's 4-1 win over Towson to open the season. It was the second career two-goal game for Baker, who scored a pair against Fairleigh Dickinson in 2009. She now has 10 career goals, tied for 10th on the Mount's all-time list. Baker is also tied for 12th all-time at the Mount with 24 career points (10g, 4a).
Season Openers: The Mount won a season-opener for the second consecutive season with a 4-1 victory over Towson. The Mount is now 3-18 all-time in season-opening games.
Youth Will Be Served: The 2012 Mount women's soccer roster features 11 new players, including 10 freshmen. Overall, 17 of the Mount's 24 players are freshmen or sophomores.
Preseason Poll: The Mount was picked to finish 11th in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches poll.
Celebrating 20 Years of Mount Soccer: The Mount will be celebrating 20 years of women's soccer history this season. The Mount will have an alumni game on Sunday, September 30, at 10 am and will honor a 20th Anniversary Team at halftime of the 1:00 p.m. game against Navy that day.
