Women's Soccer Battles Monmouth to 1-1 Tie

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 28, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's opened Northeast Conference play with a 1-1 tie against visiting Monmouth at Waldron Family Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) scored her team-leading four goal of the year in the game.

Baker gave the Mount a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second half when she blocked a clearing attempt by a Monmouth defender near the top of the penalty box, corralled the loose ball, and beat Monmouth goalkeeper Lia Fierro.

Mount St. Mary's (3-4-3, 0-0-1 NEC) had a chance to extend the lead with just under eight minutes left. Freshman Ragan Cote (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) crossed the ball to the middle to Kaylyn Mahon (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove), who had her point-blank shot denied by Fierro.

The Hawks nearly tied the game with 2:54 left when Kim Malecki's shot from the far left grazed the crossbar. Monmouth continued to press forward and was rewarded when Dana Costello received a flick pass from Malecki in the middle of the box and was able to chip the shot past Mount keeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) for the equalizing goal with 1:48 left in the game.

Monmouth (5-3-1, 0-0-1 NEC) had the best scoring chance in the first overtime when Costello was sent in on a breakaway, but she had her shot denied by Miller.

In the second overtime, the Mount's Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) had the best scoring chance when she drove to the goal, but her shot was just wide to the left.

The Mount held a 16-to-11 advantage in shots in the game, including a 5-to-2 margin in the overtime periods. Monmouth held a 6-to-2 edge in corner kicks. Miller had a pair of saves in the game for the Mount while Fierro made five stops for the Hawks.

The Mountaineers remain unbeaten at home this year with a 2-0-3 mark at Waldron Family Stadium.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, October 1, when Robert Morris visits for a 5:00 p.m. game at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
